Seminar: History, Development and Methodology of Psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology
A.Y. 2025/2026
Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with knowledge relating to: the intertwining of philosophical and medical knowledge in the same historical period (between the 6th and 4th centuries BC) in different cultures, such as Greece and China; the evolution of the holistic view of the human being and treatment programs; the influence of the dualistic view of human beings that originated with Christian philosophy (4th-5th centuries) and became established with Descartes (17th century) in the scientific field, the clash between mechanism and vitalism; the dominance of reductionism in medicine and in the nascent experimental psychology; James and Janet, thinkers who went against the fundamental trend in Arab medicine and science.
Knowledge will be provided on the revolution in the foundations of science: 1) relativistic and quantum physics and the new vision of the relationships between phenomena; 2) the science of stress: from Selye to McEwen, from homeostasis to allostasis; 3) the study of molecular relationships between large biological regulatory systems and the psyche; 4) the epigenetic revolution; 5) ongoing changes in psychological traditions and neuroscientific research.

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will:
- have acquired knowledge of the main philosophical ideas that have emerged throughout the history of medicine;
- have developed the ability to reason about the effects of different schools of thought dealing with health and disease;
- have acquired the ability to identify and describe the critical issues and strengths of various schools of thought regarding the vision of human beings, health, and disease.
