Learning objectives
This course aims to strengthen the students' sociolinguistic competence with regard to diaphasic and contact varieties of Spanish, and to develop appropriate metalinguistic skills. Students will hone their ability to understand and produce texts of a personal nature (biographical interview and linguistic biography), as well as oral discourses, whether they be autonomous presentations or interactions with other people. Mediation skills will also be trained, with a focus on the vocabulary of the business and administration sectors. The course is both theoretical/descriptive and practical; it will promote the use of new technologies for learning Spanish in various contexts and examine different analysis techniques (discourse analysis, pragmatics, corpus linguistics and sociolinguistics).
Students will also acquire some grammatical and syntactic structures of the Spanish language, with particular reference to verbal periphrases and discourse markers.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students are expected to reach at least a C1 level in Spanish under the CEFR, including proficiency in written and oral communication with regard to a wide range of specialised topics (politics, economics, social sciences and tourism). Moreover, they should be able to describe the contents of the course in Spanish, and analyse texts and adopt mediation strategies in the above-mentioned contexts on their own.

Unit 1 Hispanic sociolinguistics (Prof. Bonomi, 40 hours)

Unit 1 focuses on sociolinguistic variation in the Spanish language in its different expressions. Starting from the analysis of the various linguistic manifestations of Spanish in the European and American geography, the second part of the course will be focused on the Spanish language in its diasporic dimension between the United States, Europe and the rest of the world. At the same time, a part of the course is dedicated to the depiction and a critical insight on the sociolinguistic contexts of contact between Spanish and other languages in situations of social bilingualism or diglossia, exploring issues related to language policies, linguistic identities and ideologies; and, more generally, to all those phenomena that involve the sociolinguistic and glottopolitical sphere in the Spanish-speaking world.

Unit 2 Italian-Spanish Linguistic Mediation Practices (Prof. Gobbi, 20 hours)
This module, with a strong focus on oral mediation in the Spanish-Italian language pair (in both directions), is designed to develop students' competence in managing register and social variation through dialogue-based tasks inspired by authentic communicative contexts. The course includes the creation and ongoing enrichment of a terminology database (TermBase), covering the specialized domains addressed, which will serve as a reference throughout the module. Strategies will be implemented to simulate the dynamics of professional linguistic mediation.

Unit 3 Specialized Languages and Social Interaction (Prof. Satti, 20 hours)
This module addresses the use of specialized languages as a form of social interaction. It has two objectives: 1) to learn about universal principles in the organization of social interaction (turn taking , sequentiality, repair) and 2) to reflect on how these principles apply to the use of specialized languages in institutional interactions in Spanish.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam includes both written and oral examinations that will take place as follows:
WRITTEN EXAM: it can be taken three times a year (May, September and January) and includes the following tests:
- a grammatical tests
- A written production based on the reformulation of an oral text.

ORAL EXAM: it can be taken six times a year. Focused on the topics of the official course, it will consists in:
- A a mid-term assessment of unit 1 and 3 topics. The assessment can also take place during official examinations.
- The assessment of unit 2 will consist of an oral two-way mediation test (Italian-Spanish) on a dialogue relating to the social and professional fields explored during the course.

The result of all tests will contribute to average the overall assessment.

Warnings:
- To be eligible to take the oral exam, it is necessary to have passed the written exam.
- Tests taken in official rounds are valid for one academic year.
- The validity of mid-term tests is one academic year (and is specified when the results are published).
- The validation of the final assessement (written exam + oral exam) can be done only during the oral exams, upon registration.
- To take the examination, both written and oral, it is essential to be registered. It is necessary to show up with an identification document.
In addition, those who have registered and decide not to show up are kindly requested to cancel their registration through Unimia or at least notify the lecturer, by the closing date of the appeal, to allow for better organization of the exam.
