Translation from Scandinavian Languages

Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the competence and tools to:
1. apply the language skills already acquired in Scandinavian languages and Italian in order to produce translations from Scandinavian languages into Italian;
2. develop advanced linguistic and metalinguistic skills in the source and target languages, with particular attention to aspects such as usage, vocabulary, syntax, linguistic varieties, etc.;
3. develop textual analysis skills for literary texts, taking into account the interdependence and dynamics between publishers, translators and readers;
4. learn about the main characteristics of the publishing market and the translation of Scandinavian literature in Italy, understanding its dynamics, trends and challenges.

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will have acquired a solid foundation in order to:

2. translate Scandinavian texts into Italian by critically applying the main theories of translation;
3. consciously exploit their linguistic, literary and translation skills to translate texts from Scandinavian languages into Italian accurately and effectively;
4. be familiar with and proficient in using the most relevant lexicographical tools in the field of professional translation;
5. justify and comment on their translation choices;
6. critically examine Italian translations of Scandinavian texts;
7. enhance their linguistic and translation skills in Scandinavian languages;
8. develop cross-disciplinary skills related to professional figures in the publishing field, with particular attention to areas related to translation and text circulation.

Course syllabus
The course will be delivered as a translation workshop, during which specific translation issues posed by Scandinavian languages will be discussed. Cross-Scandinavian collaboration will be encouraged through the formation of mixed groups comprising students of each of the three languages. Furthermore, certain theoretical aspects will be introduced, and the role of the translator working with Scandinavian languages will be debated.
Prerequisites for admission
A thorough knowledge of one of the three Scandinavian languages is required, as well as good passive skills in the other two.

The course adopts the following teaching methods: lectures; seminar readings and discussions; individual and collaborative work on texts.

Assessment methods and Criteria
For attending students, the examination consists of creating a portfolio of materials related to the process of researching, reading, pitching, and translating a Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish literary work not yet published in Italy. Further information regarding this will be provided by the lecturer during the course.
