Learning objectives
The course aims at presenting and analyzing challenges associated with formulation, production and stability aspects of skincare and decorative cosmetic products. The teaching also takes into account the continuous evolution of the scientific conception of cosmetics, together with the changing and increasing needs of their users. Special attention will be directed to the application of such products to the skin and to the beneficial effects that may result. The course also intends to provide insights on the ability of cosmetics to maintain the skin in good condition as well as restore it normal state (dermocosmetics), color theory, and psychological motivations behind the use of cosmetics.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will have acquired the knowledge needed to deal with preliminary market analyses, which are carried out before cosmetic products fabrication, and the competences required to ensure technical and regulatory set-up of the product, i.e. from the initial idea to the go-to-market strategy.

Hints on structure and function of human skin and appendageal structures. Relevant skin types, childhood and skin aging. Effects of sunlight on the skin. Children's cosmetic products.
Overview and market prevalence of the different categories of cosmetic products and types of formulations.
Regulatory framework for cosmetics, labeling aspects.
Basic aspects associated with preservation of cosmetic products.
Skin cleansing products, formulations and interaction between surfactants and the skin. Hair products.
Cosmetic emulsification, formulation and preparation aspects. Sunscreen products. Fillers.
Introduction to color cosmetics and color theory.
Formulation and preparation aspects of the main product categories relevant to color cosmetics: compacts, extrudates, poured products and emulsions. Critical analysis of color cosmetics.
Controls, stability and safety of cosmetics. Packaging.
Innovative aspects in cosmetics.
Prerequisites for admission
The course is intended for students who have acquired basic knowledge of general as well as inorganic chemistry and of organic chemistry. It is also recommended to acquire information on pharmaceutical technology topics relevant to the contents of the course.
Teaching methods
The course is delivered in a blended learning format, combining face-to-face and online activities (both synchronous and asynchronous), with up to a maximum of 50% of the course conducted online. Online activities are scheduled regularly throughout the semester, alternating with in-person sessions according to a defined timetable. The learning activities include: lectures, seminars with industry experts, synchronous and asynchronous digital content, case study exercises, individual and group work, guided discussions with feedback.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Assessment of learning outcomes consists of a presentation prepared by a pair of students on a topic selected in agreement with the instructor, followed by an oral in-depth discussion of the same topic. For the critical analysis of a real cosmetic product, students are required to consider formulation, manufacturing process, regulatory aspects, market positioning, and innovative features.
The final grade (out of 30) is based on:
Active participation (maximum 2 points);
Presentation and discussion (maximum 28 points), evaluating knowledge and understanding of the topics, ability to apply concepts, analytical and integrative skills, critical thinking, clarity of presentation, and appropriate use of scientific language.
