"The book as material object: from the Middle Ages to the Digital Age" focuses on the history of the book, its production, distribution, and reception from medieval manuscripts to e-readers. Throughout the seminar, the book will be defined as a physical object that is shaped by design, format, uses, and marketing. Our readings of individual case studies will consider a broad range of sources from different linguistic traditions, exploring the impact of books and prints on cultural trends as well as the role of cultural trends and social practices in shaping the reading of books and prints.
