Tutoring and Educational Workshops in Prison

(20 hours - 3 credit units)
The tutor network

Thanks to an overwhelming student response, the University of Milan has set up a network of tutors encouraging, facilitating and supporting prisoner students on their academic journey.

Tutoring in prison is usually recognized by degree programmes as an educational activity within the study plan.

The tutor's role

The tutor plays a key role in ensuring the right to education, helping prisoner students overcome the restrictions of their condition. Tutoring means supporting a prisoner student with building an effective study method, preparing for exams, collecting and returning books from and to University libraries.

Tutors follow prisoner students through every step of the way, assisting them with exam choices, bringing them learning materials, helping them studying and revising for exams.

Each tutor will commit to a couple of meetings a month, for at least one semester, on no specific days or times. We offer prospective tutors short orientation and training sessions.

We currently have 97 tutors from over 30 degree programmes.

Laboratories and Educational Modules in Prison

Since 2016, as part of the Agreement with the Regional Board of the Penitentiary Administration, the University of Milan has been holding 20-hour teaching modules (3 academic credits, or CFU) in the prisons of Opera, Bollate and San Vittore, attended by outside students as well as detainees.

These modules and workshops are a unique learning opportunity for detainees, who cannot follow any lectures on campus, as well as a chance for personal and cultural growth for all students.

Admission is capped to 15-20 places, given access restrictions and spaces available. To participate, you need to pre-enrol by contacting the lecturer via email.

Once the laboratories have been scheduled, whether in person or online (depending on the current health emergency), lecturers will contact students to confirm participation and set the groups.

How can I participate?

Spaces in the workshops and educational modules – which relate to specific degree programmes - are limited due to entry and class-size restrictions. To take part, therefore, one must sign up in advance and follow the instructions provided on the webpages for the corresponding degree programme.
