Open access publications dashboard
This page contains a number of charts that measure open access rates in relation to the main academic publications of the University of Milan.
The data considered includes preprints, articles, chapters, books, critical editions and web publications of the last ten years uploaded by active professors and researchers to our institutional research repository (AIR).
The goal of the charts is to provide a wide range of indicators on the uptake and advancement of open access at our University.
Diamond open access publications come with no costs for authors and no access restrictions of any kind for readers (such as paywalls, submission of personal data or subscription to services). They are only rarely placed under embargo. Full diamond open access requires the adoption of quality practices, including persistent identifiers and reuse licences, such as Creative Commons.
Gold open access publications are made available open access by the publisher upon payment of a fee and, more rarely, after an embargo period. This fee is called "article processing charges" for journal articles and "book processing charges" for books and book chapters. For articles to be categorised as gold, the journal must also be open access. The quality practices already mentioned for diamond open access also apply to this category.
Hybrid publications are articles made available open access within journals that are otherwise not open access, that is to say, journals that normally require readers to pay a fee or subscription to access closed content. The same quality practices mentioned for the two previous categories also apply to hybrid open access.
In the green open access model, the final published version is closed access, but the publisher allows the author to make an earlier version of that publication available open access, sometimes after an embargo period. This earlier version can be the preprint (the manuscript submitted to the publisher for acceptance) or the postprint (also known as accepted manuscript, meaning the peer-reviewed version before it has undergone the final formatting stage). The above-mentioned quality practices regarding identifiers and licences also apply to green open access publications.
These publications have attachments that are available open access, but no indication is given about the open access type. Only a limited number of publications fall under this category, which is destined to disappear, as the Research Data Quality Office is in the process of determining the type of open access for every publication in AIR.
Closed access publications are those whose final published version is not available free of charge. This category also includes publications for which the authors did not make any earlier version available open access in AIR (neither the preprint nor the postprint), even though they had that option.
The chart shows the percentage of open access publications (diamond, gold, hybrid and green) out of the total publications, including closed access ones, in the specified period. Data can be filtered by publication type and year of publication.
The chart shows the percentage of publications of the last five years which are still under embargo. Please note that an embargo may apply to any version (final published version, preprint, postprint).
The chart shows the percentage of open access publications (diamond, gold, hybrid and green) out of the total publications, including closed access ones, in the specified period, for each of the 14 subject areas considered. Data can be filtered by publication type and year of publication. By default, the chart shows data for the last six years.
The chart shows the percentage of publications for each open access category (diamond, gold, hybrid, green and other OA) out of the total open access publications of the last ten years.
The chart shows the percentage of publications for each open access category (diamond, gold, hybrid, green and other OA), as well as the percentage of closed publications, out of the total publications of the last ten years.
The table shows the number and percentage of open access publications (diamond, gold, hybrid, green and other OA) of the last ten years out of the total number of publications, including closed-access ones, for each of the University's departments and their teaching and research staff. Data can be filtered by department, researcher, subject area, scientific-disciplinary sector (SSD) and open access type. By default, no filters are applied.
