Waste Management

Objectives

The Waste Management working group proposes and defines strategies and actions to achieve sustainable management of the waste cycle and reduce the quantities produced. This is achieved on the basis of responsible consumption and the circular economy in order to ensure the most appropriate and sustainable treatment method for each type of waste.

Activities

  • Analyse and improve the University Waste Management Plan
  • propose concrete actions to improve
  • waste sorting
  • handling of special wastes
  • prevention of plastics production
  • Promote awareness campaigns
  • Intensify networking and collaboration

University initiatives

The activity of the working group begins with an analysis of various experiences and best practices. The University promotes a range of sustainability actions, including:

  • reduction in plastics (e.g., use of plastic water bottles), with four drinking water tanks and 41 consumer supply points available to Departments and technical and administrative staff, and 25 dispensers for students installed at strategic points on campus (vending machine area, commons, dormitories)
  • waste sorting. Working together with AMSA, all University facilities are equipped for source-separated waste collection: paper, plastic/cans, glass, and mixed
  • handling of hazardous, non-hazardous, and radioactive special wastes. The University complies with applicable laws and regulations in handling hazardous and non-hazardous special wastes (chemical, medical, veterinary), applying standardized procedures to ensure traceability and transfer to authorized waste handlers. The University specifically handles disposal of batteries, lead-acid batteries, empty toner cartridges, electrical and electronic devices, furnishings and oversize wastes, radioactive wastes.
