Formulation and Legislation of Cosmetic Products
A.Y. 2018/2019
Learning objectives
Students acquire the know-how concerning preparation and controls of the main cosmetic products.
This course is designed to introduce the principles of formulation, preparation and quality control of cosmetics according to the latest legislation and regulations. The theoretical and formulation aspects of the main cosmetic vehicles and preparations are examined. The physicochemical properties of raw materials and functional ingredients are reviewed. Preparation methods and controls to evaluate the product stability are also explained.
Laboratory exercises are planned to balance the theoretical perspectives with practical applications.

Technology
Introduction to skin: structure and function. The skin barrier, principles and mechanism of percutaneous absorption. Methods for studying percutaneous absorption.
Physicochemical principles: interfacial phenomena; disperse systems: colloids, emulsions, and suspensions; rheology. Formulation aspects of semisolid preparation for cutaneous application (ointment, cream, gel and paste) with different viscosity. Innovative preparation, such as cosmetic patches and liposomes. Decorative cosmetic products.
Legislation
The rules governing the production and the marketing of the cosmetic products and other herbal products (medicines and health foods).
