Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the student with the theoretical and practical notions of cellular biology through the dissertation of cellular components at the structural, compositional and functional levels and the concept of multilevel hierarchical organization. In particular, the course aims to 1) provide the basic principles for understanding the centrality of the cell in the biology of multicellular organisms; 2) to outline the characteristics of cellular specialization even at the molecular level; 3) provide application skills regarding methodological and instrumental procedures aimed above all at the observation of cellular elements in a tissue context.

The course will also provide the students with basic theoretical notions of evolution and biological systematics. The course will enable the student to acquire both a critical approach to the study of the diversity of living matter and the propedeutic notions in the study of animal histology and anatomy and physiology
Expected learning outcomes
The student will know and understand: the main differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells; the morphology and function of the main cellular components and its specializations; the basic principles of how cells interact in the context of multicellular organisms; The basic principles regulating cell cycle and the methods of cell division (mitosis and meiosis); gametogenesis and the basic principles of the early stages of embryonic development; the basic techniques for the observation and study of the cells; the basic principles of the origin of life, evolution and natural selection; basic notions on systematics, phylogenesis and classification of living organisms; basic concepts of classification and main characteristics of invertebrates and vertebrates
The student will be able to critically apply the concepts learned, during the observation of histological preparations; they will be able to describe the function of the main cellular components in a tissue context; they will be able to recognize diploid and haploid cells in the context of male and female gonads; they will be able to answer questions of medium / advanced level of cell biology; they will be able to answer basic questions about animal evolution, systematics and diversity of the animal kingdom

Course syllabus
The course is divided into 4 parts: 1) The first part concerning the general information on cell theory, characteristics of living organisms; 2) The second part concerning the individual cellular components and cellular specializations in the tissue context; 3) The third part concerning the theory of evolution, the classification and the main characteristics of some Phyla of zootechnical interest; 4) the fourth practical part is dedicated to the study of the main morphological and functional investigation methods on cells and tissues, with particular reference to cell specializations and gametogenesis

Lectures (5 CFU)
- Introduction to the course; Definition living organisms: molecular and cellular organization (2 hours)
- Chemistry of protoplasm (3 hours)
- Plasma membrane and cell compartmentalization (4 hours)
- Cytoskeleton and morphological and functional specialization of muscle tissue cells (4 hour)
- Cellular adhesion and communication (3 hours)
- Energy metabolism (3 hours)
- Nucleus and Genome: structural and functional aspects (6 hours)
- Gametogenesis, development and differentiation, apoptosis (4 hours)
- The plant cell, general characteristic (1 hour)
- The theory of evolution; basic concepts of tassonomy and biological systematic; introduction to the diversity of the animal kingdom; main characteristics and classification of vertebrate and invertebrate animals (10 hours)

Practice (1 CFU)
- Instrumental approach to the study of living matter (cell cultures, optical and fluorescence microscopy, live imaging, western blotting and purification of cellular organs) (8 hours, seminar)
- Exercise in the microscopy laboratory (elements of cytology such as nucleus, membranes and cell junction, etc in different histological preparations, gametogenesis) (6 hours)
- Cell Culture Laboratory with particular reference to gametogenesis (2 hours)
Prerequisites for admission
No particular prerequisites are necessary; however a basic knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry is recommended.
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars, hands on training in the tissue-culture and microscopy laboratories; Active learning using multiple choice questions during lecture, often students work in groups

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of two parts. The first part consists of a written test administered in the form of a test of 30 multiple choice questions (1 hour) on all the topics that governs access to the oral exam. The second part consists of an oral exam aimed at verifying the knowledge of the topic, the exhibition capacity, the ability to critically analyze the contents. The oral interview will be assessed out of thirty and the final grade will consider the accuracy and quality of the answers, as well as the communicative ability and the ability to adequately motivate statements, analyzes and judgments during the interview.
