Learning objectives
U.D.1. The course aims to provide knowledge to deal with rural areas analysis and planning, as well as to evaluate its consequences on environment and landscape. The course aims to provide the students with the cultural, normative, methodological and technical bases to deal with - also in multidisciplinary teams - the problems of landscape and environmental planning.
U.D.2. The course aims to provide the bases for the design of buildings and facilities for agricultural activities, which meet environmental sustainability requirements, in compliance with the environmental legislation in force and taking into account the requirements of technical and economic feasibility. Moreover, the objective is to train students in the application of the methods of analysis and assessment of the environmental performance of livestock farms, also aimed at environmental certification (ISO14000-EMAS).
U.D.2. Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student shall have:

- Knowledge of cultural bases of landscape planning.
- Knowledge of reference norms, with particular reference to that of Regione Lombardia.
- Knowledge of methodologies, procedures and techniques to analyse and evaluate the characteristics of rural areas.
- Knowledge of some practical example cases.
U.D.2
- Knowledge of environmental legislation related to agricultural activity with particular reference to the application of the industrial emissions directive (IED) to livestock farms.
- Criteria for choosing the best technologies available for reducing the environmental impact of agricultural activity.
- Bases of environmental certification in agriculture and livestock (ISO14000 and EMAS).
- Knowledge of the calculation tools for the evaluation of the environmental performance of the farms and for the definition of the integrated environmental management systems based on compliance with the regulations and environmental certification.

The "Environmental and landscape planning" teaching unit will deal with the following topics:
· Approach evolution to rural land-use/landscape planning,
· Notes on Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment,
· Brief history of Italian legislation on land-use/landscape planning,
· Lombardy Region legislation on rural land-use/landscape planning,
· Land take and soil sealing,
· Analysis and assessment of the characteristics of the rural landscape,
· Methods, techniques and technologies for rural land-use/landscape planning,
· Green Infrastructures and Nature Based Solutions,
· Greenways and soft mobility planning,
· Italian legislation on public tender.
Moreover, seminars of external experts will be proposed on topics such as, for example:
· The geological component in land-use planning,
· Urbanistic aspects in land-use planning,
· Participative processes in planning,
· GIS in land-use planning.
Rural structures and installations: their requirements and environmental compatibility in the context of current legislation. Analysis of the requirements of legislation and standards in terms of integrated environmental management. Environmental management systems. Principles of environmental analysis and their application methodologies in the context of farm structures and equipment. The Best Available Techniques. Identification and selection of the best techniques for reducing the environmental impact of agricultural production activities with particular reference to livestock farms. Integrated environmental assessment. Design criteria for emission reduction systems for agricultural companies. Technical and economic evaluation of the solutions and criteria for choosing between alternative solutions. Integrated environmental management methods applied to farms. The steps to be taken for the implementation of an integrated environmental system. The importance of management and monitoring. Case Studies Application of integrated environmental management principles to practical cases.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The assessment is carried out through a written examination for the "Environmental and landscape planning" teaching unit, and through the preparation of a project by the student and by an oral examination, for the "Environmental management of livestock farms".
