Learning objectives
The course aims to enable students to reflect on the formal and semantic structure of French lexicon: recognizing simple and constructed lexical units, being aware of lexical creation processes and loan words; distinguishing between polysemy and homonymy, recognizing the main tropes underlying changes of meaning, analyzing key semantic relationships.

Seminar objectives:
- to consolidate aural comprehension skills: listening and understanding of contemporary audiovisual documents in standard French (films, documentaries, television broadcasts); (guided) comprehension of French lessons / lectures with argumentative structure;
- to consolidate oral production skills: clear and correct oral expression from the point of view of morphosyntax and pronunciation; active participation in conversations / interactions in French on familiar topics (also with reference to texts and films covered by the program);
- to consolidate reading comprehension skills: reading and understanding of news articles / dossiers in standard French on current issues, recognizing the author's attitudes / points of view; reading and understanding contemporary fiction and non-fiction texts;
- to consolidate writing skills: drafting clear, detailed texts with the help of a monolingual dictionary, using linguistically correct French with relevant lexical choices.
Expected learning outcomes
Lectures
Knowledge: students are able to reflect on French grammatical structures and in particular on complex sentences; they know the basics of French lexicology.
Skills: students are able to analyze - including in a contrastive way - the characteristics of French complex phrases, and to master their use to improve written and oral production; they will also expand their active and passive lexical competence.Skills acquired through Seminars:
- aural comprehension: ability to listen to and understand contemporary audiovisual texts in standard French (films, documentaries, television broadcasts); ability to follow (with guidance) French lessons / lectures with argumentative structure;
- oral production: expressing oneself orally in a clear and correct manner from the point of view of morphosyntax and pronunciation; actively participate in conversations / interactions in French on familiar topics (also with reference to texts and films covered by the program);

Course syllabus
The course, entitled The formal and semantic structure of the French vocabulary. Elements of French morphosyntax,
consists of three teaching units:
1st semester, unit A (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Origins of French vocabulary and word formation;
2nd semester, unit B (20 hours, 3 ECTS): The meaning of words
I and II semester unit C (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Elements of French morphosyntax.

As the acquisition of 9 ECTS is compulsory for this course, students will have to follow the full program.

Units A and B will be dedicated to the analysis of the formal and semantic organization of vocabulary in order to make students aware of the peculiar characteristics of the French lexical system also from a French-Italian contrasting point of view (origins of the French lexicon; lexical morphology: derivation, composition, borrowing; lexical semantics: polysemy and homonymy, semantic relations).
Unit C will introduce students to the study of the syntax of the French complex sentence (subordinate relative, completive, temporal, conditional, expression of cause, consequence, purpose, opposition).

The 2019-2020 course programme is valid until September 2021.
Prerequisites for admission
The course, which is held entirely in French, the examination materials and bibliography presuppose an initial B1 level in progress.
In order to take the French 2 exam, it is a requirement to have passed both the French 1 and the French Literature 1 exams.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: face-to-face lessons, face-to-face activities. In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the Esercitazioni form.

Note to students not attending
Students who are not attending are invited to contact the lecturer before beginning exam preparation. Given the greater difficulties arising from self-preparation, it is recommended to devote sufficient time to study and develop the content of the program.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Written and oral examination:

Written part (concerning practical classes): grammar test (25 min.); dictation (25 min.); proof of comprehension and written production from a written document (2hrs; only for this test the use of a monolingual dictionary is allowed).
In order to pass the written part, these two conditions must be met: a) not more than 1 test under 18/30, b) reach an overall average of at least 18/30.
The results will be published on the Ariel page of French 2.

Partial tests are scheduled at the end of each semester for attending students (max. three absences). If passed, they replace the written test entirely.

Students can view their written exam papers in the Contributors and Linguistic Experts' office.


Oral part relating to the pratical classes: conversation in French based on the collection of texts for oral expression in the programme (assessed in 30/30).
Oral part related to the monographic Course: conversation in French on the course content (evaluated in 30/30). The average between the two parts, to be taken in the same session, constitutes the mark of the oral part.

Partial tests are scheduled for students attending at the end of each semester both for the practical classes (max. 3 absences) and for the monographic Course (max. 3 absences; written test relating to unit A in the first semester and unit B in the second semester). If passed, they entirely replace the parts of the oral to which they refer.
The assessment on unit C of the monographic course concludes the oral part for all students.


The weighted average between written and oral marks will be calculated when entering the exam results.

The written and oral parts must refer to the same year and may be taken in free succession.

IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO COMPLETE BOTH PARTS OF THE EXAMINATION WITHIN 12 MONTHS.

The entering of results takes place:
- at the end of the oral test, if the written test has been taken previously
- during the first oral session after the written test, if the oral test has been taken previously. In the latter case, students must necessarily register and attend the oral assessment session, even if they already have two marks (oral and written test).

International students or incoming Erasmus students are invited to contact the lecturers as soon as possible. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be agreed with the lecturers, in agreement with the competent office.
