Learning objectives
The course aims to provide non-specialist students with an overview of French Literature and Civilisation, with a focus on influence and mediation with Italian Literature.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: 1) An essential framework of French Literature, according to the periods and authors considered, 2) Understanding basic elements in order to analyse texts' structure (metrical, stylistic, narrative devices).
Skills. 1) Ability to identify the main expressive features (stylistic, thematic and structural) of every literary work and recognize the author's identity in it 2) Ability to date literary works in chronological and cultural connection with Italian literature, 3) Ability to use coherently critical contributions 4) Ability to read works and identify themes and formal issues.

Course syllabus
The course aims to provide a reflection on the 'classic' category in French literature and to highlight the complexity of this aesthetic category, in Italy and France, during the following periods:
1. From the Italian Renaissance to the Classicism of Louis XIV: analysis of the following texts: Phèdre, de Racine, Le Misathrope, de Molière, and Le Petit Poucet, de Perrault.
2. The first half of the 20th Century: The Nouvelle revue française experience and two André Gide's works of classical influence, Le retour de l'enfant prodigue and Thésée
3. The second half of 20th Century: Michel Tournier's work, the rewriting of a classic fairy tale, La fugue du Petit Poucet.

Prerequisites for admission
Passive language skills are necessary to understand and analyse French literary texts and part of the critical material in French (20%). The third unit includes a critical dossier entirely written in French.
Teaching methods
The course will be offered in a lecture format and include: a summary of French literary history focusing on the period of Louis XIV and on some classical moments of twentieth-century culture; an analysis of texts structure (rhetorical, stylistic, narrative and theatrical devices).
Class discussion: during the five last lectures, students will be engaged in proactive work and required to compare and contrast the 'classicism' in the tales of Perrault and Tournier.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral exam: the exam will consist of an interview in Italian on Classicism. Students will have to analyse the French texts and put them into their historical and literary context. They will have to recognise the elements of a classical poetic form and its fortune in the twentieth century and to analyse the texts structure (rhetorical, stylistic, narrative and theatrical devices).
Evaluation criteria: Students' ability to date literary works in cultural connection with Italian literature and to use critical contributions coherently. The ability to identify the category of classicism will also be evaluated.
