Learning objectives
The course provides the basic knowledge of mendelian, population, quantitative and molecular genetics applied to livestock production.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will own the basic knowledge of selection programs implemented in livestock populations. They will be able to use the available tools in order to operate selection or individuals in livestock, being aware of the basic principles of Mendelian and quantitative genetics behind the ongoing selection programs.

Course syllabus
'H13-136-A' - 'Didactic Unit - Basic genetics'.
The basic genetics module is divided into two sections:
1. A theoretical part of Mendelian genetics relating to species of zootechnical interest
2. An exercise part that will allow the student to put the notions received into practice

Frontal teaching (24 hours)
1. Mendelian Genetics
2. Mendel's laws exceptions: Epistasis, Interactions, Lethal genes
3. Test-cross, Pedigree analysis
4. Sex-linked, sex-limited and sex-influenced characters
5. Cross-environment genetic correlations, penetrance, genetic expressivity, pleiotropy
6. Molecular, Genetic, Immunological markers and their application on animal production
7. Chromosomes and Genes: Cariotype, genes and chromosomes mutations
8. Association and crossing over; genetic, physical and comparative maps
9. Genes structure; replication, transcription, translation and interference

Practical labs (16 hours)
Exercises on the topics covered in the theoretical part

H13-136-B - Didactic unit: Genetic Improvement

Class Lectures (24 hours)
1. Additive relationship, inbreeding and tabular method (2 hours)
2. Quantitative traits: the infinitesimal model (1 hour)
3. Genetic parameters: heritability and repeatability of a trait; correlation among traits (1 hour)
4. Farmer and breeding system in Italy. Statistic on Italian milk breeds under selection (2 hours)
5. Definition of traits under selection: selection criteria, selection objective (2 hours)
6. Selection schemes in animal production (cattle, sheep and goats, swine, poultry, fish) (2 hours)
7. EBV and its components, the animal model (2 hours)
8. One locus model as a basis for genomic selection (2 hours)
9. Principle of genomic selection and its integration in the selection schemes in livestock with particular emphasis in dairy cattle (4 hours)
10. Expected genetic progress (accuracy of selection, selection intensity, generation interval) 4 hours
11. Selection choice from a farmer perspective (4 hours)

Practical labs (16 hours)
