Learning objectives
The course is addressed:
- to students of the three-year degree course in Sciences of Cultural Property (9 CFU).
- to students of the master's degree in History and Criticism of Art (6 CFU)
- to all students of the master's degree in Music, Theatre and Film (6 CFU).
The course aims to introduce the students of these degree courses to the study of Ancient Greek literature in its historical development, presenting its communication modes, through the critical analysis of the texts, with a particular focus on the text-image relationship.

Expected learning outcomes
Students are expected to have an adequate knowledge of Ancient Greek literature in its historical development, its main exponents and its critical points.
Students are requested to be able to place each text or author in the proper historical context, They should also show an adequate ability to read critically and contextualize the proposed texts.

Is rhetoric useful? Persuasion and psicagogy in Ancient Greek literature between poetry and prose.
Teaching Unit A (20 hours, 3 cfu, Prof. Carla Castelli): 'Art' between word and image: téchne and other key concepts in Greek literary civilization.
Teaching Unit B (20 hours, 3 cfu, Prof Stefano Martinelli Tempesta): The function of rhetoric from the archaic age to the Hellenistic age.
Teaching Unit C (20 hours, 3 cfu, Prof. Stefano Martinelli Tempesta): Persuasion and psicagogy in Classical Greek prose.
Working students must show up to an interview with Prof. Carla Castelli in order to compile the form available on the teacher's Ariel website. An appointment can be arranged by e-mail.

Prerequisites for admission
A previous knowledge of Ancient Greek is not requested.
The preliminary attendance of a basic course of Ancient Greek, with a final assessment, is requested to students who are going to obtain a master's degree in Archaeology. The basic course is also open to all interested students.

Teaching methods
The course consists of frontal lessons; the intervention and the active participation of the students is requested. A fundamental tool is the Ariel platform for online teaching, on which the lesson schemes are available together with the literary and iconographic materials presented and discussed in the classroom, bibliography and links to qualified web materials.

Outlines of the history of Greek literature (archaic, classical, Hellenistic and imperial) will be studied on a handbook of the student's choice; during the lessons the teacher will explain how to choose the handbook. The minimum requirements of this part of the program are indicated on prof. Castelli's webpage (Ariel; in the section 'Informazioni > Programmi').

Assessment methods and Criteria
Preliminary written test + oral test:
1. Knowledge of the contents of module A will be compulsorily verified with a written test at the end of the course.
2. For students attending the basic Greek language course, a written assessment prior to the oral exam is required.
3. Knowledge of Greek literature in its chronological development and the contents of modules B and C will be verified orally.
