Learning objectives
The course presents the main development in the History of Institutions from the end of the modern age to the present day in Western Europe.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will have acquired a good knowledge of the development of European institutions from the end of the modern age to the present day. They will also be able to place events and characters in the appropriate chronological and geographical contexts. Students will also acquire appropriate linguistic tools, needed to express clearly and effectively the specific concepts and topics of the discipline. They will learn to read critically historiographical works and use the tools of the discipline, including information technology, to research for and analyze sources. These skills will be acquired through a direct and continuous engagement between students and the teacher. Moreover, the discussion of the sources proposed will constitute an essential moment of critical reflection and methodological learning. The attendance at workshops and seminars organized by the teacher, and covering topics discussed during classes, will also be of great importance.
Non-attending students could make use of learning materials provided by the teacher, a reading list agreed with the teacher and one-to-one meetings during office hours.

Title of the course: Institutions and Society from the 19th to the 21st Century. Italy in the European Context
Module 1: The Legacy of the Ancien Régime and the Nineteenth-Century State
Module 2: The First Half of the 20th Century. Institutions between Democracy and Totalitarianism.

Deep knowledge of the european history from the end of XVIII century to the present day
Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is strongly recommended although not compulsory. The teaching is delivered through frontal lectures aimed primarily at the acquisition of knowledge, competence and specific language of the subject. Discussion with the teacher in the classroom is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the capacity to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.

- Evaluation criteria: capacity to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; capacity for critical reflection on the completed work; quality of exposition, competence in the use of specialised lexicon, efficacy, clarity.
- The format of the exam for students with disabilities should be arranged in advance with the professor, as well as the relevant office.
