Course syllabus
This course, entitled History and Texts of Italian Literature, consists of three didactic units, which will be addressed in sequence:
Teaching unit A (20 hours, 3 ECTS-credits): Italian literature: from 13th to 15th century.
Teaching unit B (20 hours, 3 ECTS-credits): Italian literature: from 16th to 19th century.
Teaching unit C (20 hours, 3 ECTS-credits): From the 'Grand tour' to Modernity: patterns and forms of travel writing.
The course includes the acquisition of 9 ECTS-credits; the students will then adhere to the complete program. It is not possible to take only 6 ECTS-credits.
Teaching units A and B will offer a profile of Italian literature from 13th to 19th century, focusing both on the most relevant figures and works and on texts considered exemplary, which will be read and commented during the lessons. Analysis of the texts will start from paraphrase, as a preliminary step needed to understand the text, before analyzing the main thematic issues, ideological and formal aspects.
Teaching unit C will deal with patterns and forms of travel writing, especially from the period between the XVIII and the XIX century, when the accounts of the Grand Tour as well as the 'sentimental' journeys were produced. The first part of the unit C will be devoted to a historical and critical introduction including the definition and the development of the genre, while the second part will involve reading and discussing extracts from travel literature (the analysis will be focused especially on Francesco Algarotti and Vittorio Alfieri, probably the most important XIX century travellers, and their works).
The programme is valid up to February 2021.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a preliminary written test on teaching units A and B and an oral test on teaching unit C. The written test is held in January and May 2020 and in January 2021; passing the written test is a prerequisite for the oral exam. Written tests will be graded sufficient, discreet, good, excellent and will be considered in the final overall grade.

Oral test consists of an interview on fundamental topics of the work dealt with in teaching unit C. Assessment is marked out of thirty, and it will take into consideration the grade of the written test.
Non-attending students, international students and Erasmus students are invited to contact the professor in office hours for informations on the exam. Examination methods for students with disabilities or SLD must be defined with the teacher in agreement with the University Disability and SLD Services.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Written + oral exam:
at the end of the class, either in November or December, a two-hour written exam on Unit A (no dictionary allowed) tests the understanding of the specificities of literary texts, as well as students' familiarity with the basics of critical scholarship, and their acquisition of a personal and grounded judgement. Clarity and rigor of the analysis is required through a proper use of the critical vocabulary. An additional test is typically scheduled in September (to be confirmed).
Grades breakdown: Fail, Basic, Average, Good, Excellent.
Once the written part is completed, students can access to the oral exam (Unit B). All students can take part in it, even those who were graded as Fail (in which case, they will have to repeat their preparation of Unit A, in accordance with the teacher).
The oral part asks for the same learning requirements as the written part, and, in compliance with the Italian academic tradition, will be graded on a 30-point scale, from 18/30 to 30/30 cum laude.
