Learning objectives
This course aims at proposing an approach to the analysis of variation and change in the evolution of Portuguese language in a sociolinguistic perspective. Special attention will be given to Brazilian Portuguese. After a first theoretical framework, students will be invited to analyse and discuss on literary texts, newspaper articles, interviews, film scenes and videos. Some of the central themes of the course will be: the study of informal and oral communication, the analysis of popular/marginal culture's expressions (also seen as instruments for group-identity affirmation and resistance to linguistic preconception), as well as the reflection on political discourse as a point of intersection of linguistic attitudes related to domination and legitimation structures.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: to acquire the central concepts of sociolinguistic analysis applied to contemporary Brazilian Portuguese; to learn about the main differences between standard/formal and popular language.
Applying knowledge and understanding: to grasp the social, linguistic and political implications of the evolution of Portuguese language in Brazil; to know how to reflect critically on texts and discourses related to informal/marginal and journalistic communication. Achievement of B2 level of CEFR.

The course The contemporary Brazilian Portuguese between norm culta, norm popular and "marginalidade": social and linguistic repercussions between identity affirmations and construction of political consensus consists of the following three teaching units:
A: Notions and tools of variational sociolinguistics applied to the Portuguese language.
B: Popular culture and informal linguistic codes in contemporary Brazilian.
C: Analysis of political and journalistic discourse through oral and written media.

The course provides 9 credits. It is not possible to acquire only 6.
The course will focus on the analysis of the variations and characteristic changes of the evolution of the Portuguese language in a sociolinguistic perspective. Particular attention will be given to Brazilian Portuguese; after the initial theoretical framework, ample space will be given to the practical work of reflection on authentic material (literary texts, newspaper articles, interviews, films and videos). Some of the central points of the course will be the study of the typical traits of speech and informal communication, the analysis of expressions related to popular/marginal culture - also understood as a tool for affirming group identity and resistance to socio-cultural prejudice-, as well as the reflection on political discourse as a place of intersection of linguistic behaviors linked to structures of domination and legitimation.

The course program is valid until September 2021. From the summer session 2021 it will be possible to present exclusively the A.A. 2020-21 program.
Prerequisites for admission
The course is held in Italian and Portuguese. Textbooks and activities in class or for self study assume that students already have a linguistic competence of level B1. To take the Portuguese language 3 exam you must have passed the Portuguese language 2 exam and the Portuguese and Brazilian literature 2 exam.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: lectures; viewing and commenting on videos; readings and analysis of newspaper articles. Furthermore, the course is complemented by 'esercitazioni' classes, for which reference is made to the specific form.

For each teaching unit, specific critical essays on individual works or on general questions will be made available on the site. Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written and an oral test, both compulsory, with the mother tongue teacher and an oral test with the teacher of the monographic course. The written exam lasts 4 hours and includes a part of written comprehension, one of written production, one of structural and lexical competence; the oral test with the mother-tongue teacher will consist of a language interview; The oral exam with the teahcer of the course includes questions asked by the teacher and interactions between teacher and student. This last part takes place in Italian and portuguese. The interview aims to verify the knowledge of the texts studied, the capacity for contextualization, the ability to expose, the precision in the use of specific terminology, the capacity for critical and personal reflection on the proposed themes.
For attending students only (those who attend 75% of hours), the final written test can be replaced by two partial written tests, the first at the end of the first semester and the second at the end of the second semester. All the results of the written tests (final and partial) will be announced on the Ariel page of the course.
The final grade is expressed in thirtieths, and the student has the right to refuse it.

International or Erasmus incoming students are invited to contact the teacher promptly. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be established with the teacher, in agreement with the competent Office.
