Learning objectives
The course focuses on key issues and themes of Scandinavian linguistics in a synchronic and/or diachronic perspective that enhances connections with the methods and approaches of general linguistic studies.
Expected learning outcomes
The students will acquire sound and systematic knowledge of themes and problems referred to the linguistic situation and practice in Scandinavia. They will be able to apply knowledge and models in a contrastive perspective, and will develop an attitude to constructive comparison of different realities identifying networks of similarities and differences.

Course title: "Historical-comparative linguistics in a social perspective".
The course consists of three units (A, B, C). Students will attend units A nd B for 6 ECTS; they will add unit C for 9 ECTS.
As a whole, the course will focus on the following themes:
- Language and dialect: scientific definitions and popular taxonomies.
- Sociolinguistics: relations between codes; diglossia with two written codes in Norway; monolingualism (Iceland, Sweden, Denmark) with residual dilalia (Sweden, Denmark); official bilingualism in Finland and its sociolinguistic substratum; the sociolinguistic situation of minority languages; postcolonialism in the linguistic situation of The Faroe Islands and Greenland; language functions; variation; identity.
- Languages classification: the Scandinavian continuum within the Germanic system; dialectometry; geolinguistics.
- The languages of Europe in a Nordic perspective.
- Historical and comparative linguistics of the Scandinavian languages: internal characteristics; diatopic phonetics and morphology.
- Etymology: word formation; loans and neologisms; Scandinavian words and their relations to the rest of Europe: magic-religious motivations of insect and animal names; plant and fruit names in relation to their geographic origin; parallel semantic motivations.

Prerequisites for admission
The course is partially taught in the Scandinavian languages and a number of works on the reading list are in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. A very good knowledge of one Scandinavian language is therefore required.
Teaching methods
Teaching methodologies: lectures, seminarial lessons/class discussions, individual study of critical literature.

The following reading list is valid for all units. Every title is assigned some points in square brackets.
Students that have attended classes will study, in addition to lecture contents, a selection of works with a total amount of points equal or higher than the number of ECTS required: at least 6 points for 6 ECTS; at least 9 points for 9 ECTS.
Non attending students will add further 4 points: at least 10 points for 6 ECTS; at least 13 points for 9 ECTS.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a face-to-face dialogue with questions on the course contents and every reading selected by the student. The dialogue is in Italian and its duration (20 to 45 mins) depends on the number of ECTS and on the number and type of readings (monographs or articles). The aim of the exam is to ascertain the student's knowledge and understanding of the selected readings, the ability to personally and critically comment on the discussed themes, the usage of technical terminology.
Grades are expressed on a 30-point scale. Students have the right to reject the mark (which will be registered as "ritirato" in this case).
International or Erasmus incoming students are required to contact the teacher as soon as possible. Students with SLD are required to contact the teacher to plan specific exam activities according to the instructions of the office in charge.
