Teaching Workshop: Research Tools for the Study of Popular Music and Audiovisual Media

Learning objectives
The workshop is addressed to students from the undergraduate course in Scienze dei beni culturali and the graduate course in Scienze della musica e dello spettacolo, who intend to write a final thesis on popular music subjects or music in audiovisual media (film, music video, videogames, etc.). The workshop is structured as a seminar and aims to provide students with the basic tools for: planning a research; establishing a methodology; putting together a thought-through bibliography; selecting case studies and dealing with specific typologies of sources such as discography, filmography, multimedia supports
Expected learning outcomes

-Awareness of the analytic and research tools for the study of popular music and music for audiovisual media;
-Ability to plan and organize a research on a case study suitable for a final thesis;
-Ability to write an abstract, the state of the art, the methodology, the goals, the provisional table of contents, and a bibliography of a research project.

Prerequisites for admission
In case of a high number of pre-registrations, preference will be given to those who are in an advanced phase of their study career and are about to start their final thesis.
Teaching methods
The workshop is structured as a seminar: theoretical lecturing alternates with practical activities to be done individually or in groups in the class.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Students are expected to write a short final assignment related to their thesis research project. The final paper will be structured as such: title; abstact (c. 200 words); 5 keywords; state of the art (200-500 words); goals (200-500 words); methodology (150-250 words); tentative table of contents/working plan; bibliography; discography/videography.
Credits will be assigned upon approval of the final assignment; revisions may be required by the lecturer.
