Learning objectives
- Characterize the manifestation and mechanisms of toxicity
- Provide scientific basis for experimental toxicology and criteria for evaluating and extrapolating toxicity data to humans
- Provide adequate toxicological knowledge and valid bases for defining the criteria for protecting human health from the risks deriving from the direct (drugs, food additives, etc.) or indirect exposure (environmental pollutants, industrial solvents, etc.) of substances (chemical and biological).
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of the main aspects of toxicology with particular reference to general and organ toxicity of xenobiotics

Assessment methods and Criteria
Aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge on the principles of toxicology through the characterization of the main mechanisms of toxicity at both cellular and organ level and through the mechanisms of differente classes of chemicals. Acquisition of these competences will be evaluated by oral examination on any topic of the program.

Course syllabus
· Principles of Toxicology
· Understanding of the concepts of general pharmacology applied to toxicology (relationship dose-effect, risk, local and systemic effects, secondary effects, and toxic effects of drugs and other xenobiotics.
· Toxicokinetics and Toxicodynamics
· Concepts related to the absorption and the biotransformation of drugs and other xenobiotics and their elimination.
· Molecular mechanisms of toxicity
· Understanding of the primary mechanisms of cellular toxicity, definition of apoptosis and necrosis and markers of cellular damage.
· Relevant classes of toxicants (metals, natural toxins, pesticides, solvents, etc..)
· Main systems and target organs of toxic substances (including the effects of genotoxicants, carcinogens and teratogens)
· Pre-Clinical experiments and main toxicological tests
· Diet-drugs interactions
· Concept of human risk
· Definition of the protection criteria of human health from the risk deriving from the direct intake (drugs, food additives, etc.) or indirect intake (environmental pollution, industrial solvents, etc.) of chemical and biological substances.
