Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with general notions of embryo-fetal development and the theoretical and practical notions of morphological and structural organization of cells, tissues and organs of domestic mammals and the main zootechnical interest. The course will also provide theoretical and practical, basic and specific knowledge, useful for the achievement of independent judgment, communication and learning skills useful for dealing profitably with the study of physiology , of the pathology, animal reproduction, welfare, breeding conditions, as well as the characteristics and quality of the animals according to the productions.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will be able to know and understand the main characteristics and differences of the tissues (epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous), will be able to use the anatomical terminology appropriately and will be able to know and understand the organization, structure and function of the integumentary, digestive, male and female uro-genital apparatus; the student will be able to know and understand the general morphology, architecture and structure of bones and muscles, the structure of the vessels, the heart and the general organization of blood and lymphatic circulation, of the respiratory system and of the peripheral and central nervous system. Students will also be able to understand and understand the processes of gametogenesis, fertilization, segmentation and the aspects underlying the process of gastrulation in birds and mammals. Finally, the student will be able to know and understand the main differences regarding the placentation process in domestic mammals. The student will be able to critically apply the concepts learned, during the observation of histological preparations; will be able to describe the function of the main organs and apparatus; will be able to answer questions of medium/advanced level of general and systematic anatomy.

Teaching methods: If all the lessons could not be held in person, they will be held in a "mixed form", that is, partly in the classroom and partly remotely through the Microsoft Teams or Zoom platform. In particular, for the Anatomy course the students of ABA will attend lesson in the classrooms two days a week, in groups. These days will be mainly dedicated to classroom and/or laboratory exercises and in-depth activities and will be organized in repeated groups depending on the capacity of the classroom. In particular, it is expected that lectures and hands-on training will be organized as follows:
Lectures: Most of the lectures will be delivered remotely through the Microsoft Teams or Zoom platform and can be followed both in synchronous according to the scheduled time and asynchronously, because they will be recorded through the same platform and made available by the teacher through the Ariel platform. In the case of seminars or lectures delivered in the classroom, the lessons could still be followed synchronously or asynchronously by those who will not be able to attend the lesson in class, through the same platforms. Where possible, the lessons will be videotaped and made available through the Ariel platform.
The teacher will constantly update the students through the Ariel platform on the methods of teaching delivery.

Program and reference material: The program and the reference material of the lectures will not change. All educational support material will always be made available through the Ariel platform.

Learning assessment procedures and assessment criteria: If the situation allows it, the exam will take place in writing and in presence, according to the procedures described in the section "Exam procedures". Alternatively, the exam will take place in remote through the "eXam Manager" platform followed by the oral part using the Microsoft Teams platform or similar. In this case, the duration of the test will be about 20 minutes and will mainly focus on assessing the student's ability to apply the knowledge acquired to analytical problems.

Lectures

Histology (22 hours)
Histogenesis and differentiation. Epithelial tissues. Connective tissues. Basic components. Ordinary and Special Connective tissues. Unilocular and multilocular adipose tissue.
Cartilage tissue. Bone tissue. Blood: general and morphology of erythrocytes, granulocytes, monocytes, lymphocytes, platelets.
Muscle tissues. Nerve tissue. Neuron: general structure and function. Synapses. Glial cells.

Anatomy (26 hours)
Anatomical terminology, planes and axes of reference, regions and cavities of the body. Integumentary system. Locomotor apparatus: general organization, architecture and structure of bones and muscles. Digestive system of monogastric and ruminants. Urinary system. Reproductive system. Cardiovascular system: heart and general organization of circulatory system. Anatomy of the respiratory system. General organization of the nervous system.
Gametogenesis. Fertilization. Principles of early embryogenesis. Segmentation and gastrulation in birds and mammals. Fetal membranes in domestic mammals and placentation.

Practical sessions (16 hours)
Seminars on the fields related to anatomy, histology and embryology (8 hrs)
Laboratory: observation of histological samples with the optical microscope (8 hrs). The practical part takes place in Microscopy Classroom with micro- and macroscopic anatomy exercises.
Prerequisites for admission
Prerequisites for the understanding of the course content and the achievement of learning objectives are the knowledge of the basic concepts of animal biology and cell biology.

Lectures, classroom seminars and microscopy laboratory sessions. Practical sessions of macroscopic anatomy on plastic models of domestic animals.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written test, administered in the form of 30 multiple choice questions, which regulates access to the oral examination, aimed at ascertaining the acquisition, correct understanding and ability to rework the course content. The test will be assessed out of thirty and the final score will take into account both the accuracy of the answers of the written test as well as the communicative ability and the ability to adequately motivate statements, analyzes and judgments during the oral examination.
