Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the critical tools that allow them to deepen their knowledge of the different socio-cultural dynamics of Latin American modernity. The use of the various textual and audiovisual materials should foster critical thinking, while stimulating the delineation of autonomous research processes.
Expected learning outcomes
Consolidation of knowledge of multiple cultural aspects - literature, visual art, music - featuring the contemporary Latin America scene. The application of the theory and practice of Cultural Studies in socio-historical and linguistic contexts, allows to develop an autonomous research paths in specific aspects of the Hispanic modernity.

During the emergency teaching phase, the program is maintained with the necessary modifications for a good online use of the course originally designed for face-to-face teaching.
The lessons will be held mainly remotely using Teams, with the exception of a face-to-face meeting during the first week of the LIN year (from 28/09 to 2/10) and two lessons scheduled during the week from 2 to 6 November

Course syllabus
The course aims to start a reflection on the broad theme of cultural representations of racism and social discrimination in Latin America, also according to the latest events (the assassination of George Floyd in the United States and the difficult sanitary conditions of indigenous and black peoples).
All the texts indicated in the bibliography will be considered, together with the examination of other materials loaded in Ariel.

Prerequisites for admission
The student, in addition to an adequate domination of oral and written Spanish and an awareness of his American variants, must know how to orientate himself in the Latin American mosaic and possess adequate historical-cultural information related to the territories under study. Otherwise we recommend consulting the following reference materials:

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will take place in the presence or remotely, according to the provisions provided by the university, and will consist of an oral interview in Spanish aimed at ascertaining the critical reworking of information and stimuli provided during the lessons and widely present both in the bibliographic material and in the in-depth study uploaded on the Ariel platform. The student will be able to propose insights or research hypotheses relating to other Latin American contexts.
Attending students, in addition to the bibliography reported in the program and to the loaded Ariel materialists, will have to refer to all the lessons, which will be recorded and will be available only within Teams.
