Learning objectives
Learning goal of this course is to provide the students with the methodological skills for an advanced approach - in terms of textual comprehension and literary interpretation - to the Greek literature (from the Archaic to the Greek-Roman period), through the discussion of some case studies.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: students are expected to gain a complete control of the historic development of the Greek literature and a deep knowledge of the literary genres (formal patterns, contents, socio-cultural impact); they are also expected to know the main lines of the scholarly discussion, at least over the last decades.
Ability: students will be able to read in Greek all the texts of the Greek literature and to discuss them with critical attitude by placing them in their historical, literary and cultural contexts; students will be also familiar with the bibliographic databases and with the most useful tools of humanistic informatics.

Course syllabus
Literature about literature: judgments, controversies, reference models.
Teaching unit A (20 h, 3 cfu): From the origins to the Hellenistic period
Teaching unit B (20 h, 3 cfu): The Imperial age
Teaching unit C (20h 3 cfu): Towards Byzantium
Prerequisites for admission
A firm grasp both of Greek language and literature is requested.
Teaching methods
The lectures are intended to provide students with a solid method in textual analysis, translation, and literary exegesis, starting from the linguistic, stylistic and rhetoric aspects of the texts, consolidating and reinforcing the students' knowledge and exegetical methods in the literary analysis.
Texts, iconographic materials and documentation will be available on the Ariel platform.
In agreement with the students, alternative forms of teaching can be experimented.
Course attendance is strongly recommended.

Teaching unit A: an anthology of texts will be available on Ariel.
Teaching unit B: an anthology of texts will be available on Ariel. Furthermore, ad edition of On the sublime" with Greek parallel text, e.g. Dionisio Longino, Del Sublime. Introduzione, testo critico e commentario a cura di Carlo Maria Mazzucchi. Seconda edizione rivista e ampliata con Index verborum, Milano 2010. Further indications will be given in class.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The oral exam aims to verify the language skills of the student as well as his/her historical and critical skills, and in particular his/her ability to translate, comment and contextualize the texts using proper exegetical categories, in the original language, starting from the ones presented in class.
Marks will be out of 30.
