Italian for Foreign Students I

Learning objectives
The course provides basic competencies of present Italian lexicon in its structure and in its evolutionary aspects. It also aims at improving critical examination of contemporary lexical renewal and the relation between Italian and foreign languages. Further goals concern the developing of analysis and production's skill, both spoken and wtitten, about different texts' typologies. The aim is consistent with the goal of the CdS to create a qualified professional figure of a culturally aware language expert.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to recognize the structure of contemporary Italian lexicon, also in its connections with foreign languages, and to use lexicographic tools. The student will also be able to understand and to produce different typologies of texts, in relation with diverse purposes.

Should it become necessary to use online teaching, the program designed for face-to-face teaching is modified as follows:
Teaching methods.
Lessons will be held in synchronous mode, trying to enhance interaction (chat and forum), using MsTeams mainly; only in specific cases communicated to students, the lessons will be held in asynchronous mode (videolessons). In case there are activities in presence (following the indications of the university), students who cannot participate will be offered an alternative online activity that will allow them to develop the same linguistic skills of analysis and text production.
The timetable of the lessons remains unchanged and all the most important information will be provided through the ARIEL website pages of the course.
The methods and criteria for the lessons in attendance, which require a reservation with the appropriate app, will be published in good time on the ARIEL website pages of the course.

Course syllabus
In addition to the course, there will be 60 hours of language exercises, which will take place in the first and second semesters. The exercises are aimed at deepening the contents of the lesson and improving the comprehension and production skills, both written and spoken; they are also aimed at helping in the study of the texts covered in the programme.

UNIT 1
The first unit intends to develop the critical attention around the innovative elements within the contemporary Italian vocabulary: neoformations, loans and calques. It also intends to illustrate the expansion process of Italian in the other major languages.
UNIT 2
The second unit, closely linked to the 3, is focused on the study of the Italian articulated according to the textual typologies; in particular the narrative, descriptive and regulatory texts will be studied, for each of which the morphological, lexical and syntactic characteristics will be highlighted. During the course, the class will also start reading a linguistic autobiography, in order to stimulate the students' reflection on their own learning experience of the Italian.
UNIT 3
The third unit continues and integrates what dealt with in the second one, facing texts of informative type (with particular attention to the Italian for the study) and of argumentative type. The theoretical aspects will be constantly accompanied by the practical ones, for which the student will be asked to participate actively in the lessons with production of texts and exercises. In the course of the unit the reading of a linguistic autobiography (vd. Unit 2) will be continued, urging students to write their own.

Teaching methods
The course is divided into three units, structured in such a way as to develop different and coordinated competences. The three units are based on theoretical reflection around the contemporary Italian language combined with a communicative approach to the teaching of the Italian language in its different textual types.

Assessment methods and Criteria
For units 2 and 3 there is a written test, aimed at ascertaining the acquisition of the skills of understanding and production of written texts. After passing the written test, there is an oral one consisting of a colloquium on the topics of the programme, aimed at ascertaining the acquisition of contents and, at the same time, the skills acquired in spoken Italian.
