Learning objectives
The course is designed to present essential concepts of pathological processes and altered health states. Thus, the main objective is to study the pathological mechanisms beyond the systemic diseases paying special attention to the etiology (cause of the disease) and the pathogenesis (origin and development of a disease). The fields covered will be: atherosclerosis, cardiocirculatory system, neurodegenerative diseases, thyroid, diabetes mellitus, liver, microbiota and immune system.
Brief summary:
1. Classification of systemic and organ specific diseases and how they manifest clinically.
2. Identification of abnormal physiologic conditions causing the disease.
3. Study of the etiology and pathogenesis of diseases, with the final goal to identify specific pathways that can be targeted by biotechnological approaches.
Expected learning outcomes
Identification of the different etiologies and pathogenetic mechanism correlated to the pathological processes: atherosclerosis, cardiocirculatory system, neurodegenerative diseases, thyroid, diabetes mellitus, liver and microbiota.
Ability to translate the theoretical approach to a more practical one. To pursue this object, the students will face with recent research articles which have addressed the mechanisms beyond the pathologies studied.
To acquire the ability to relate these essential basic pathological processes to the pathogenesis of common and important diseases.
To correlate clinical features with the causes and mechanisms of disease.
