Learning objectives
The main objective is to acquire knowledge about the composition, the therapeutic efficacy and the side effects of medicinal plants.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will have to know the mechanisms responsible for the interaction between the drugs and their main constituents with the biological systems, the therapeutic applications and the precautions for use in specific situations.

Teaching methods
The lessons will be held on the Microsoft Teams platform and can be attended both synchronously based on the timetable of the second semester and asynchronously as they will be recorded and uploaded on that same platform.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam will be an oral test through the Microsoft Teams platform. The teacher will assess the basic knowledge and the ability of the student to logically organize the knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for the interaction between the drugs and their main constituents with the biological systems, the therapeutic applications and the precautions for use in specific situations.
Course syllabus
The program of the course provides for the presentation and discussion of the following topics:
- Notions of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics;
- Interaction of medicinal plants with drugs or food;
- Analysis of medicinal plants for the gastroenteric system, for the respiratory system, for Alzheimer Disease, for the cardiovascular system, for the urinary tract, for the eye pathologies, for the prevention and the treatment of cancer, for the therapy of diabetes, plant used as galactogens;
- lectures focusing on antinflammatory natural products, hive products, green tea, Cannabis Sativa, Calendula Officinalis, Arnica Montana.
Prerequisites for admission
As reported in the Programme description, the courses of "Pharmacology and toxicology", "Plant biology and pharmaceutical botany" and "Pharmacognosy 1" are preparatory and compulsory.
Teaching methods
The teacher will use face-to-face lessons.
Teaching Resources
The slides of the lectures are available on the ARIEL website. The suggested textbooks are "Farmacognosia e Fitoterapia" by Mazzanti, Dell'Agli, Izzo and "Fitoterapia" by Capasso, Grandolini, Izzo.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will tackle all the parts of the program and the student should demonstrate to have acquired the basic concepts of any subject. The exam is written and the total examination time is 2 hours. The exam is constituted of 7 multiple choices questions (2 points each) and two open questions (8 points each). A lesson at the end of the course is dedicated to exam preparation with test simulations.
The teacher will evaluate the basic knowledge and the ability of the student to logically organize the knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for the interaction between the drugs and their main constituents with the biological systems, the therapeutic applications and the precautions for use in specific situations.
The final mark is in thirtieths and will be communicated when the final vote is registered with the possibility of rejecting the outcome of the exam. The teacher is available to review the exam with the students.
