Learning objectives
The pathophysiological information obtained from the audiological investigations must be integrated with broader knowledge in the field of neurology, in the area of diagnostic imaging and otolaryngology.
Expected learning outcomes
Acquisition of the ability to recognize and distinguish the various pathologies affecting the auditory and vestibular apparatus.
Basic knowledge on the diseases most frequently encountered in clinical practice with particular interest in acquiring the rudiments to set up a correct diagnostic-therapeutic course of the pathologies affecting the apparatuses.

- An outline of the anatomy of the ENT district (ear, nose, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity and oropharynx, larynx).
- Pathophysiology of tubal dysfunction and pathological implications on the middle ear.
- Pathophysiology of rhinitis and rhinosinusitis.
- Pathophysiology of the adenotonsillar lymphatic structure.
- Pathophysiology of the larynx.
- Pathophysiology of respiratory disorders of the ENT district.

Diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy
Course syllabus
1. History of radio-otology, from symptoms to the radiologic diagnostic approach to the ear: hypoacusis, tinnitus, balance disorders and vertigo, facial nerve paralysis.
2. Normal radiologic anatomy in CT scan, CBCT and MRI.
3. Imaging procedures employed in the investigation of the ear: basic principles of CT scan, CBCT, MRI, RMA, CTA, angiography.
4. Informed consents addressed to patients for CT scan and MRI studies - Contrast media.
5. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT): applications and general principles of radiation protection.
6. Imaging in ear disorders.
7. Role of radio-otology in ear surgery and in cochlear implant surgery.
8. Deafness in paediatric patients: neuro-radio-otology and clinical genetics.
9. Central acoustic pathways - functional MRI (fMRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI).

- the diagnostic approach to developmental delay and intellectual disability
- the characteristics of childhood cerebral palsy, the diagnostic approach, therapeutic and rehabilitative management
- the characteristics of the autistic disorder
- the main causes of infantile cerebral palsy (PVL, hypoxic encephalopathy-perinatal ischemia, TORCH infections)
- the characteristics of childhood epilepsies and to know the correct care behavior in case of epileptic crisis
- the peculiarities of movement disorders in developmental age - the main mood disorders and anxiety disorders in childhood
