Learning objectives
The course has a double goal: to give, on one hand, an introduction to the general concepts of translation studies and to develop, on the other hand, the specific skills of interpretation and recoding of specialized texts and of audiovisual material. The autonomy of judgment of the student will be increased through the study of the scientific criteria for the evaluation of translations. Particular attention will be paid to strengthen the interlinguistic reformulation skills.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course the student will be more aware of the main problems of the translation process in the field of specialized communication, both terminological and morphosyntactic and pragmatic, and will be able to overcome translation difficulties thanks to in-depth knowledge of translatological concepts and enhanced skills in use of various translation techniques.

Course syllabus
After some theoretical reflection on the specifics of translating for subtitling and some practical exercises, autonomous work on some audiovisual materials is searched, the aim of which is to lead the class to acquire the specific skills of this transadaptation technique. Then, we will approach some general reflections on literary translation, to get to work on some texts and dialogues in the literary field.
Prerequisites for admission
Good knowledge of Russian language (B1+ level)
Teaching methods
- Acquiring specific skills in the translation / adaptation of dialogues for subtitling (from Russian to Italian);
- Developing a basic reflection on the practice of translating texts in the literary field;
- Improving the use of Italian editing rules.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Test with open and multiple choice questions on theoretical knowledge; translation from Russian into Italian of audiovisual material. The student will have to produce translated texts in the form of subtitles that respect the space-time parameters and editing rules of subtitling, adopting translation solutions that are synthetic and that return the semantic content and the dialogue register of the original.
