Learning objectives
The course aims at introducing students, by means of a monographic experience, to the most common issues that it is necessary considering for the analysis of long series of meteorological data.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students must be able to perform an analysis of long series of meteorological data. Specifically they must be able to face the following issues:
· Data organization;
· Quality checks;
· Homogeneity checks and data homogenization;
· Time series analysis, with particular focus on spatial and temporal trends;
· Analysis of the physical mechanism that may have determined the observed trends.

Course syllabus
Lectures
Introduction to the main issue that it is necessary to consider for the analysis of long series of meteorological (data organization, quality checking, homogeneity checking and homogenization, time series analysis, investigation of the underlying physical mechanism).
Laboratory
Monographic experience on an issue selected in agreement with students. The issue will be selected in order to allow addressing all the main issue that an activity of analysis of long series of meteorological data has usually to consider. Examples of possible issues are:
· analysis of the temporal evolution of atmospheric visibility over an Italian region since 1951;
· analysis of the temporal evolution of cloudiness over an Italian region since 1951;
· analysis of the temporal evolution of solar radiation over an Italian region in the last decades;
· analysis of heavy and extreme precipitation over an Italian region;
· analysis of the spatial distribution of precipitation normal values over an Italian region;
· analysis of the spatial distribution of temperature normal values over an Italian region.
Prerequisites for admission
The competences that are usually acquired in a three-year degree in physics are sufficient to attend the course.
Teaching methods
Teaching method consists in starting the course with introducing students to the main issues that it is necessary considering for the analysis of long series of meteorological data. Then the the softwares R and R-STUDIO will be introduced.
After these lectures, the experience of data analysis will start. This experience is a monographic experience on an issue selected in agreement with students. The issue is selected in order to allow addressing all the main issue that an analysis of long series of meteorological data has usually to consider.
The frequency to the course is obligatory.
Teaching Resources
The necessary learning material will be provided during the course.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The final test is an oral exam of about one hour. The exams starts with a talk of about 30 minutes in which the student presents all the steps of her/his analysis. After this presentation, the teacher makes a list of questions with the aim of understanding how much of the used methodologies have been assimilated by the student. Moreover, he checks how much the students is able to critically approach the investigated problem.
