Learning objectives
The objective of the course is to provide the necessary tool to make a rule for the breeding animals taking into account the farm destination and the animal welfare.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will be able to identify the differences in livestock farming typologies and be able to propose mitigation strategies to control environmental impact.

Course syllabus
The course is divided into 40 hours of lectures and 48 hours of exercises.
In particular, will be developed the following topics:
Lectures
· Development of project. (4h)
· The structures of the factory. Foundations, walls, floors, roofing, stairs, different materials of construction. (6h)
· The technological systems. The hydro electric, heating and air conditioning, generality. (2h)
· The needs of animals in terms of indoor environmental quality (temperature, relative humidity, air speed). (1h)
· Environmental changes induced by the presence of animals and facilities for maintenance
welfare conditions (insulation, ventilation, air treatment). (1h)
· The calculation of the coefficient of heat transmission, the realization of the insulation. The
materials, thermal bridges, the vapor barrier, the effect of the thermal inertia.(2h)
· The determination of the volume of ventilation in summer and winter, the verification of the thermal balance of a building. (2h)
· The cooling and heating of a building, possible solutions, the costs. (1h)
· The lighting of buildings, its effects on animals. (1h)
· Buildings for cattle in the stalls and free stalls for dairy cows. the needs environmental, distributional patterns and construction, prefabrication, the working time. (1h)
· The milking parlor, the different solutions, mechanization, the milk and salt and local service. I areas for the periparturient. (1h)
· Patterns and structural design of stables for cattle rearing the young, for calves and beef cattle. (2h)
· Buildings for pigs. The different organizational settings: a closed cycle, open cycle,
"the isowean". (1h)
· Buildings for industry birth, weaning, for gestation (hold heat, first and second phase). The evolution of types in recent years with the development of technologies breeding. (2h)
· The piggeries in the phase of growth and fattening, the floor cracked, its not, the solutions emptying and implications for animal welfare and the quality of indoor air. (1h)
· Patterns and structural design (1h)
· The shelters for horses. The different types of teams, the needs of different sectors livestock. (2h)
· The environmental impact of livestock-induced water, soil and air. (1h)
· The limitation of the techniques (water and agricultural use). (2h)
· The facilities and equipment for handling solid and liquid waste. (2h)
· The storage tanks, different constructive solutions. (1h)
· The buildings for the preservation of green fodder (horizontal silos, vertical), and dried (barns, hay in two days). (2h)
· Issues related to reuse of old buildings. (1h)

Practice
It is expected to carry out:
Classroom exercises with the screening of videos relating to various operational issues
related to the environmental impact of livestock and the latest solutions
housed involving animal welfare. (18 h)
Patterns of classroom exercises and structural design of stables for the young cattle breeding, for calves, beef cattle and pig farms (Ventilation, K index, silos dimension etc.) (30h)

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written test lasting 90 min, in which the student must answer open and closed questions and carry out an exercise part (calculation of the heat transmission coefficient, summer and winter ventilation, sizing of shelters for intensive farming).
