Learning objectives
The teaching workshop shows the students the main characteristics of etymological studies applied to Romance languages; it will also focus on the scientific instruments that can be useful for this kind of researches, and on some important methodological issues.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will learn how to use the instruments that are fundamental to etymological researches applied to Romance languages; this will also allow to discuss their significance in the history of Romance linguistics. The collective discussion of case studies will show the students how to face this kind of researches, giving them the chance to consider also some problematic methodological issues.

By adopting a historical perspective, the activity presents the instruments that are fundamental to etymological studies applied to Romance languages. The class will discuss case studies under the supervision of the teacher, and this will allow to deepen the main methodological issues of the subject. This approach wants to show that etymology is an essential tool not only for the study of texts (with particular attention for Medieval ones), but also for the comprehension of our linguistic reality.
Prerequisites for admission
None. Nevertheless, basic notions about historico-comparative grammar of Romance languages will be appreciated.
Teaching methods
Students will be required to discuss the subjects treated in class, and to work at individual or group researches.

Working materials will be provided by the teacher.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The constant participation to the activities and the results of the assigned works will be verified.
