Learning objectives
The workshop aims to present the main notions related to the publishing professions, with a particular focus on scientific publishing. In particular, skills related to the different tasks of an editor will be developed, such as proofreading, adaptation to typographical conventions, graphical layout.
Expected learning outcomes
The workshop aims to develop the following skills:

Critical thinking skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will display a sufficiently independent critical approach in selecting and interpreting the notions that are most relevant their area of study and to the broader socio-cultural context in which they operate

Communication skills:
By the end of the workshop:
- students will be able to effectively communicate the acquired knowledge and disseminate it to the general public;
- student will have developed basic IT skills concerning knowledge preservation and transfer.

Learning skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will have developed the learning skills required to continue their studies in keeping with their own research interests. In order to meet this objective, students will also develop relevant skills in the independent interpretation of sources and in the use of basic IT tool for bibliographic research.

Course syllabus
The aim of the workshop is to present the main notions related to the publishing professions, with a particular focus on scientific publishing. The first section of the workshop will be dedicated to a brief historical introduction on the history of books, retracing the main stages of their evolution, from the papyrus to the medieval codex, from the first prints to digital publications.
Afterwards, the workshop will introduce to scientific publishing, illustrating the different types of publication (journals, series, etc.) through some examples taken from the most famous national and international publishers. It will also explain the tasks of the different figures, such as the editorial board, the advisory board and the peer reviewers.
In the third section, the workshop will deal with the different phases of the production of a book or a scientific journal, in particular the main tasks of an editor will be analysed, such as proofreading, adaptation to typographical conventions, construction of notes and bibliography, graphical layout.
Finally, the workshop includes a practical section devoted to the use of the software InDesign.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Participation in the proposed group activities and drafting of a final report.

Evaluation criteria:
- autonomy of judgment;
- ability to cooperate in a working group;
- ability to communicate and express oneself, also using information technology;
- ability to synthesise and write correctly;
- autonomy in the use and verification of sources, bibliographic and basic computer tools for research and scientific updating.
