Learning objectives
The theoretical and practical course aims at providing the basic knowledge for the identification of osteological faunal remains from archaeological excavations in order to understand the exploitation of animal resources in different chronological and cultural contexts.
Expected learning outcomes
Students attending the course will acquire basic skills for the identification of most animal bones and also for the organization and interpretation of zooarchaeological data.

Introduction to Zooarchaeoloy - The skeleton - Anatomical determination and identification of species, sex and age at death - Domestication & breeding practicies- Use of secondary products - Taphonomy - Rituals - Processing of animal hard tissues - Case Studies - Statistical analysis of data - Practice activity on faunal osteological remains.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will consist of an oral test with questions and discussion plus a practical part for the determination of animal remains from archaeological sites. Attending lessons is highly recommended. Non-attending students have to schedule a meeting with the lecturer to have assigned an alternative program and materials.
