Learning objectives
The course aims to deepen the study of the French language in the Master's Degree Programme. At a theoretical level, the course proposes the diachronic study of French in relation to certain historical moments and the study of today's French observed through oral corpora and through essays and literary texts that will be the subject of written analysis up to the construction of dissertations. At a practical level, the development of reception, production, interaction and mediation is proposed at different levels, corresponding to the CEFR levels B2, B2+, C1, C1+.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of some moments in the history of the French language and understanding of the evolution of the system. Knowledge and understanding of oral and written French in authentic corpora and in various complex textual typologies such as essays and literary writings. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: full B2 level and higher levels for all linguistic-communicative activities: reception, production, interaction and mediation and development of strategies related to them. Ability to analyse the French language in a diachronic and synchronous perspective.

Course syllabus
The course is entitled Knowing how to reflect on the French language in diachrony and synchrony and consists of the following three teaching parts, which will be teached in parallel:
A (20 hours, 3 ECTS): From sentence syntax to text syntax [ Prof. Monica Barsi]
B (20 hours, 3 ECTS): The evolution of French from its origins to the 18th century [Prof. Barbara Ferrari]
C (French Linguistic mutation) (20 hours, 3 ECTS): As a lexicographer [prof. Cristina Brancaglion]

The course provides 9 ECTS. It is not possible to accrue only 6 ECTS.

Part A: This part involves the study of sentence and text syntax with a focus on the structure of the text by writing a commentary on an issue according to a predetermined writing plan.
Part B: This part will illustrate the fundamental periods in the evolution of French, from its origins to the 18th century. The phonetic, morphosyntactic, lexical and orthographic development of the French language will be analyzed by texts from different eras, contextualized from a historical and cultural point of view.
Part C: The third part aims to combine the use of the dictionary as a working/research tool with metalinguistic reflection, through the observation and writing of lexicographical records of various kinds and the analysis/elaboration of short reading notes.The course has a website on the Ariel teaching platform, to be consulted for all the communications, and a group on the Teams platform, where teaching materials used during lessons will be collected.

The course programme is valid until September 2024. From the winter session 2025, it will only be possible to take the A.Y. 2023-24 programme.

The course adopts the following teaching methods: classroom lessons . In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the Esercitazioni form. In the emergency phase, see above.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Written and oral examination:

The examination consists of two written tests (prise de notes and commentaire or dissertation), an oral exam relating to the practical class, an oral exam for Part B and Part C, all evaluated in 30ths. The final vote will be unique and will take into account the outcome of all the tests. The written and oral tests may be taken in free succession. The final vote will be evaluated at the end of all the tests at the first useful oral exam.

International students or incoming Erasmus students are invited to contact the teacher as soon as possible. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be agreed with the teacher, in agreement with the competent office.
