Teaching Workshop: Protagonists and Spaces of Japanese Design Between Italy and Japan

Learning objectives
The Laboratory aims to offer for the students an opportunity to know and be in direct contact with the most representative personalities, the most important spaces and the main institutions involved with the Japanese design from the Sixties up to today, considering the international context with a special attention to Milan, a central city for exchanges and the birth of new movements and projects of collaboration between Japanese and Italian designers, architects and artisans. Students are invited to collaborate actively to the organization of the international symposium JAPAN DESIGN, which will be held in October 13-14 in Aula Magna, giving them a field in which apply their capacity to create a project, to coordinate backstage services, to interrelate with foreign guests of the field and with local institutions dedicated to design.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of the most representative names, spaces and institutions involved in Japanese Design since the Sixities with special attention to the territory of Milan. Knowledge of how an international symposium is projected and coordinated, acquisition of basic organization capacity together with the specific English and Japanese terminology of design.

The laboratory aims to let the students know the strong link in the field of design that exists between Milan and Japan, by analyzing and visiting the spaces dedicated to design on the territory -museums, public and private collections, foundations - as well as through the professional witness of major designers and curators of the field. Students will be invited to participate actively to the organization of an international symposium on Japanese design in order to become aware of the different perspective of job in this field also through the direct contact with Japanese personalities.
Prerequisites for admission
Capacity to read, study and understand texts written in English. Be aware it's necessary to learn also basic technical words in Japanese/Chinese
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons and seminars with designers and curators both in class and outside in private and public archives and museums of design and crafts. Practical activity for the organization of a symposium on design subject and archive practice.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The frequency of the laboratory will be registered and it will be valued with a final discussion.
