Learning objectives
The objective of this course is to prepare students for English Language Communications activities. By studying English Grammar & Linguistics, building relevant Vocabulary for Communications, learning about Communication Theory, Media, Advertising Techniques, Multimodality, the principles of Rhetoric, in addition to Intercultural Communications, students will complete this course with the necessary tools to effectively communicate, both linguistically and culturally, in an international context.
Expected learning outcomes
In addition to solidifying their knowledge of both the Grammar and Culture of English Language, students will acquire the necessary skillset so as to be able to both analyze and craft strategic Communications in English for a range of activities including Written, Verbal, Nonverbal and Visual Communications. Students will also develop a knowledge of Visual Grammar, appropriate for International Communications activities.

Course syllabus
The students will learn English at an intermediate level in the context of media communication. By reading/listening/watching authentic materials, students will have the opportunity to develop lexico-grammatical and metalinguistic skills that will enable them to recognize and analyse the linguistic strategies characteristic of mass media communication in newspapers, radio and TV, internet. An introduction to communication science, to advertising techniques, to the media, to the concept of multimodality and to the principles of rhetoric will support the development of media literacy, linguistic awareness and critical thinking skills in an intercultural context. Students will not only learn specific English language skills which are relevant to their overall formation in Communication Science but will also develop their knowledge of the nature of the English language itself.

Pre-intermediate level of English.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following frontal and interactive teaching methods: lectures with reading/listening comprehension, translation, analysis and contextualisation of texts and visual documents. Grammar and use of English activities in context. Constant involvement of students in the analytical and critical process of learning.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written and an oral test both assessed in thirtieths. 18 is the pass score. The written test will ascertain the knowledge of grammar, syntax, subject specific and academic vocabulary through multiple choice answer questions. The oral test will consist in the presentation and analysis of 5 documents:
a) An advert.
b) An editorial (500 words or more).
c) e d) Two articles from newspapers or magazines (500 words or more each).
f) A film review.
The students will select the documents and analyse them following the instructions given at lesson (attendees) or the examples illustrated in the compulsory texts. All (some, at least) documents should focus on the same topic, issue or piece of news.
The oral test will ascertain 1) The lexico-grammatical propriety of the presentation (10 points). 2) The quality of the linguistic-communicative analysis of the selected documents (10 points). 3) Critical and research competence, originality in the selection of material (5 points). 4) The response in the Question and Answer session (5 points).
The overall result of the exam will be expressed in thirtieths.
