Learning objectives
Providing the essential knowledge on the geology of the Mediterranean area, including orogenic belts, active subduction zones, and active extensional tectonics. The main lithostratigraphy and structures are described, a few of them are illustrated during field trips.
Expected learning outcomes
Recognizing simple rock sequences in the Mediterranean area, the main tectonic settings and their interplay.

Course syllabus
The knowledge of geological processes of the Mediterranean area is fundamental for understanding the interactions between geosphere and biosphere. Topics of the Course are: geology and geodynamics of the main geological settings (e.g., active and passive margins) recognizable in the Mediterranea area; basic concepts of extensive, convergent and transcurrent tectonics; geological history and palaeogeography of the Mediterranean area; main tectonic units occurring in the Mediterranea sea and onland; description of the main techniques of survey in marine geology; seafloor bathymetry and basic concepts of coastal morphology; interactions between bathymetry, seafloor morphology and biosphere distribution in relation to the environmental protection and anthropic action. In addition, topics regarding the petrography and petrology of selected areas will be treated. In particular, the volcanic districts of the Campania and Lazio regions as well as of the Eolie Islands will be illustrated and studied. Some insights on the methodologies commonly used for processing the geological data will be given.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic skills in Geology and Petrography are requested.
Teaching methods
Traditional teaching methods are developed during lectures using slides. Common field work activities will be employed during eventual field trips. All material is available on Ariel.
Teaching Resources
Power Point files will be given for each lesson (avalable on Ariel). Pdf files relative to scientific papers (available on Ariel) will be recommended for each lesson. Personal notes of the student.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The final examination is an oral examination on the topics illustrated during the Course and, eventually, during the field trip.
