Learning objectives
To gain an in-depth understanding of the principles of operation and operational characteristics of machinery and equipment used in the zootechnical company.
To recognize and apply elements of operational analysis related to the described technologies in order to optimize technical choices based on specific breeding needs.
Expected learning outcomes
Ability to quantify operational parameters and manage the optimal functioning of livestock machines and plants barn systems used for the production and preparation of animal feed.
Capability to compare and select among different types of machinery and equipment based on the farm management, forage type, and type of animal feed produced on the farm.
Apply criteria and synthetic methods for sizing and designing livestock plants and equipment used in livestock processes.
Understand the principles of interconnection between machinery and systems with ICT technologies used in precision livestock farming.

2. Basic principles of forages silage techniques. The operation and description of the forage harvester, and the preparation of the clamp silo (1 CFU).
3. Machines and plants for the preparation of Total Mixed Ration (1 CFU).
4. The robotic systems and the information technologies to produce and manage the Total Mixed Ration (1 CFU)
5. Description and operating principles of the milking machine (1,25 CFU).
· The main parts.
· The types of milking machines and their characteristics.
· Basic principles for dimensioning milking plants.
· Methods and instruments for performing routine functional tests on milking machines.
6. The milking robot. The sensors and the information technologies implemented (1 CFU).
7. The plants for the on-farm milk cooling (0,5 CFU).
Prerequisites for admission
The course requires knowledge of farm machinery to face the crucial aspects of the theory and of the described plants and machines. The requirements are the same both for attending and non-attending students.
Teaching methods
The teaching methods consist of:
a) frontal lesson
b) field visits
The course does not have compulsory attendance, but it is strongly recommended the lessons participation.
Teaching Resources
Teaching material is the same both for attending and non-attending students.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a unique oral interview concerning the arguments discussed during the course.
The exam mark will be based on:
- theoretical knowledge of the topics of the course;
- practical knowledge of the subject matter of the course:
- ability to speak technical language correlated with the course.
The final mark will be expressed in thirty.
The exam procedure is the same for non-attending students.
