Glaucoma patologia, diagnostica, trattamento medico e chirurgico
A.Y. 2025/2026
Learning objectives
The integrated course aims to provide students with comprehensive theoretical and practical training in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of glaucoma. Topics include the anatomical and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the disease, clinical and instrumental assessment, medical, laser, and surgical treatment strategies, and the orthoptist's operational role in functional and instrumental diagnostics and in longitudinal monitoring. The course aims to develop the knowledge and skills required to contribute effectively and technically to the clinical care of patients with glaucoma, in close collaboration with the ophthalmology team.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the integrated course, students will be able to:
Understand the essential anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the visual system as it relates to glaucoma.
Define glaucoma as a progressive optic neuropathy and understand its underlying mechanisms.
Recognize and classify the main types of glaucoma and understand their clinical progression.
Perform and interpret key clinical and instrumental examinations for the diagnosis and monitoring of the disease (imaging and perimetry).
Understand and contribute to the application of treatment algorithms (medical, laser, surgical) based on target IOP and disease progression.
Competently perform imaging and functional diagnostic tests (OCT, perimetry) in glaucoma patients.
Integrate clinical, functional, and instrumental data in the longitudinal monitoring of glaucoma patients.
Collaborate effectively with the ophthalmology team in the multidisciplinary management of glaucoma patients.
