This graduate programme aims to train physicians able to work in a palliative care setting, providing them a basis in theory and practice to care for patients at the terminal stage of any progressive illness, taking a holistic approach to the same, from treating symptoms to heading up the patient care team, and developing a treatment path.
Students in this course must hone their skills in pathophysiology and pharmacology, diagnosis, and clinical care, for all the leading complications and symptoms associated with the terminal phase, developing an appreciation of the ethical and psychological implications of terminal illness. By the end of the programme, they will have gained the ability to work independently in their chosen field.
Key learning objectives for the course include: a knowledge of the pathophysiology of pain; a basis in theory and clinical practice as needed to diagnose and treat complications and symptoms at advanced stages; learning ways of assessing quality of life; understanding an individual's health-related needs, and that of their family, and how to gauge the appropriateness and efficacy of treatment paths; gaining an understanding of the leading patient-physician communication techniques; understanding and internalising key standards of medical ethics and clinical bioethics.

To be eligible for the programme, students must hold a degree in the following class under former Ministerial Decree no. 270/2004 LM-41 Medicine and surgery.
This graduate programme aims to produce professionals having specific skills and expertise in the field of palliative care, capable of taking on professional roles in public or private hospitals or nonprofits operating within the network of palliative-care centres.
