Learning objectives
This course aims at proposing an approach to Portuguese language, and it is reserved to first-year students. The course aims to introduce the history of the Portuguese language, from its birth until the contemporary period, with a comparative approach between European Portuguese and Brazilian. The concept of the Portuguese language as a pluricentric language will also be discussed, studying the variants of Portuguese in Africa and Asia, where Portuguese is the official language, debating about the power relations that led to peculiar situations.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: to acquire the essential concepts of sociolinguistics applied to the Portuguese language; the highlights of the evolution of the Portuguese language; to identify the main differences between the European and Brazilian variant; to understand the dynamics that make Portuguese a pluricentric language. Applying knowledge and understanding: to know how to grasp the historical, cultural and social implications of the evolution of the Portuguese language; to place over time the main linguistic changes studied; to recognize and explain similarities and differences between the European and Brazilian variant of the Portuguese language; to apply the basic notions of sociolinguistics to the Portuguese-speaking worlds. Achievement of A2 level (and B1 not yet complete for all linguistic-communicative activities) of CEFR.
Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Lesson period
During the emergency teaching phase, the program and the reference material will not change.
Teaching methods: The course will be mainly held by online synchronous lectures, with the exception of some asynchronous lessons (video lessons and/or powerpoint with audio) and some in-presence lessons.
Remote lectures can be followed both in synchronously based on the first semester timetable and asynchronously, because they will be recorded and left available to students on the same platform.
The schedule of lessons and all the details of the activities will be published on the ARIEL page of the course by the beginning of the lessons. Any updates and communications will always be communicated on ARIEL, but it is very important to consult e-mail (@students.unimi.it). The methods and criteria for attending face-to-face lessons will be published in time in the ARIEL page of the course. Booking via app is required to attend the lesson in presence.

Learning verification procedures and assessment criteria: The exam is composed of a written test and an oral test (the latter includes the oral language test with the native speaker teacher and the oral test of the monographic course). The methods will depend on the indications provided by the University: the exam, both written and oral, can be carried out using the Microsoft Teams platform or, if so permitted by regulation, in person. The details and calendars of the examinations are published and constantly updated in the ARIEL page of the course.
Course syllabus
The course The evolution of the Portuguese language between elaboration and expansion: a look at the past to understand the pluricentricity of contemporary Portuguese consists of the following three teaching units:
A: The Portuguese language from the periphery to the empire (and back).
B: A look at the Portuguese language in the world between variants and protovariates.
C: Discursive analysis and critical discussion of authentic materials (articles, essays, news ...) - in particular on Brazilian and Portuguese news.
The course provides 9 credits. It is not possible to acquire only 6.
In unit A the reconstruction of the history of the Portuguese language from its origins up to the 21st century will be studied, from a not only linguistic, but also historical and cultural perspective, with particular attention to the evolution of the Portuguese linguistic system (from the diachronic and geo-political point of view). In Unit B the specificities of the Portuguese language in its European and Brazilian variants and the situation of the Portuguese language in the world, will be addressed. Finally, Unit C will focus on the analysis of authentic written and oral materials, taken from Portuguese and Brazilian media: the main linguistic and discursive aspects will be investigated (in a contrastive perspective with the Italian language) and cultural and social aspects found in the analyzed materials will be actively discussed.

Prerequisites for admission
The course is held in Italian and Portuguese, but there is no prerequisite.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: lectures, practical activities, presentations. Furthermore, the course is complemented by 'esercitazioni' classes, for which reference is made to the specific form.
Teaching Resources
The course has a site on the online platform Ariel (https://vrussolip123.ariel.ctu.unimi.it), to which reference is made for lecture notes and other materials provided by the teacher. For each teaching unit, specific critical essays or on general questions will be made available on the site. The following are the mandatory reading materials for the various teaching units.

The works listed can all be found in the Ariel page of the course except for the book by Ivo Castro, which is available in the Iberian library, in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written and an oral test, both compulsory, with the mother tongue teacher and an oral test with the teacher of the monographic course. The written exam lasts 4 hours and includes a part of written comprehension, one of written production, one of structural and lexical competence; the oral test with the mother-tongue teacher will consist of a language interview; The oral exam with the teacher of the course includes questions asked by the teacher and interactions between teacher and student. This last part takes place in Italian. The interview aims to verify the knowledge of the texts studied, the capacity for contextualization, the ability to expose, the precision in the use of specific terminology, the capacity for critical and personal reflection on the proposed themes.
For attending students only, the final written test can be replaced by two partial written tests, the first at the end of the first semester and the second at the end of the second semester. All the results of the written tests (final and partial) will be announced on the Ariel page of the course.
The final grade is expressed in thirtieths, and the student has the right to refuse it.
International or Erasmus incoming students are invited to contact the teacher promptly. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be established with the teacher, in agreement with the competent Office.
