Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basics of surveillance and prevention of parasitic and infectious diseases in intensive and extensive farming systems, to protect animal welfare, the environment and the health of consumers.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will have to know the general rules of biosecurity to enable them to manage the sanitary problems related to the main infesting and infectious diseases of animals at intensive or extensive faming level.

Prerequisites for admission
No particular prerequisites are needed.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written exam aimed at ascertaining the acquisition of correct understanding and ability to manage the course topics. The didactical tools available on the Ariel platform allows the formulation of questions aimed at verifying knowledge of the topics, the ability to critically analyze the contents. The test will be evaluated out of thirty and the final grade will take into account the accuracy and quality of the answers.

Lectures:
- Foundations of parasitology: definition of parasite, animal-parasite-environment relationship and host specificity (8 hours)
- Parasites of livestock: protozoa, fungi, helmints, arthropods (16 hours)
- Parasite control strategies and practices in farm management (8 hours)
Exercises:
- Activities in laboratory and educational farm, and computer classroom (24 hours)
- Visit to farms in the field (8 hours)

Teaching methods
Frontal lessons focused on the foundations of animal parasitology, the identification and monitoring of livestock parasites, and the control policies at the farm level. Practical activities on the computer, laboratory and in-field methodologies supporting parasite control strategies. The course ends, if available regarding epidemiological situation of Covid19, with a technical visit to farms in the field.
