Teaching Workshop: Methods and Techniques in Cognitive Psychology Research
A.Y. 2021/2022
Learning objectives
Aims of the workshop:
- to develop a series of fundamental concepts and critical knowledge on the research process in psychology, with particular attention to research methodology and quantitative techniques;
- to develop the skills that allow to critically examine and evaluate research in the psychological field, in particular those related to cognitive psychology and neuroscience;
- to develop autonomy and critical awareness about the designing research plan.

- to develop autonomy and critical awareness about the designing research plan.
Expected learning outcomes
The workshop aims to develop the following skills:
Critical thinking skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will display a sufficiently independent critical approach in selecting and interpreting the notions that are most relevant their area of study and to the broader socio-cultural context in which they operate
Communication skills:
By the end of the workshop:
- students will be able to effectively communicate the acquired knowledge and disseminate it to the general public;
- student will have developed basic IT skills concerning knowledge preservation and transfer.
Learning skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will have developed the learning skills required to continue their studies in keeping with their own research interests. In order to meet this objective, students will also develop relevant skills in the independent interpretation of sources and in the use of basic IT tool for bibliographic research.

Course syllabus
* Module "Methods and techniques in Cognitive Psychology Research
The laboratory introduces a series of research methodologies, with insights into cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Students will learn the main concepts of psychometric measurement theory and research design in psychology, as well as basic data analysis skills. In particular, the basic assumptions to design a research project will be acquired, from the identification of the research question, to data collection and analysis, and in relation to correlational, experimental and quasi-experimental research designs. The development of practical computer skills for the management of the research process will be emphasized, both in the design phase (bibliographic research and implementation of the experimental apparatus), and data analysis.
