Il corso di laurea magistrale in Scienze storiche si propone di far acquisire al laureato una approfondita conoscenza storica, con particolare attenzione a fasi e tematiche specifiche proprie della tradizione degli studi storici. Tale preparazione gli consentirà di sviluppare il senso dello spessore storico sotteso ai fenomeni, ai processi e alle strutture della realtà e gli fornirà le capacità di valutare criticamente le diverse analisi attuali e passate di quella realtà.
Gli sbocchi professionali che il corso di laurea magistrale in Scienze storiche prevede sono connessi alle capacità acquisite dal laureato di organizzare e classificare problemi e informazioni complesse in modo coerente progettando e comunicando le opportune soluzioni. Si ritiene pertanto che il laureato possa assumere responsabilità:
- in attività connesse ai settori dei servizi e delle iniziative culturali
- in istituzioni specifiche come archivi, biblioteche, musei, centri culturali, fondazioni con finalità culturali;
- in centri studi e di ricerca, pubblici e privati;
- in istituzioni governative e locali nei settori dei servizi culturali e del recupero di attività, tradizioni e identità locali;
- nell'editoria, e nello specifico in quella connessa alla diffusione dell'informazione e della cultura storica;
- in tutte le attività di relazione che comportino capacità di comprensione, organizzazione e progettazione responsabile in contesti vari, che comportino attitudine all'innovazione, alla flessibilità e alla creatività.
In particolare il laureato in Scienze Storiche potrà accedere, seguendo i percorsi previsti per le abilitazioni professionali, e/o i relativi concorsi, all'insegnamento di discipline storiche, filosofiche, geografiche e letterarie nelle scuole secondarie di I e II grado. Ovvero, acquisendo ulteriori specifiche competenze tecniche e, se necessario, abilitazioni professionali e/o relativi concorsi, potrà accedere alle seguenti professioni: giornalista, divulgatore storico, scrittore, redattore di testi critici e didattici in area umanistica (in particolare storici), docente universitario in scienze storiche, ricercatore e tecnico laureato nelle scienze storiche e filosofiche, archivista, bibliotecario, curatore e conservatore di patrimoni documentari in istituzioni museali, archivi e biblioteche.

La verifica del possesso da parte dei singoli candidati dei requisiti curricolari verrà effettuata dalla commissione di ammissione sulla base delle domande pervenute e della relativa documentazione on-line.
Gli studenti che provengono dal corso di laurea in Storia dell'Università degli Studi di Milano verranno ammessi d'ufficio.
Gli studenti provenienti da altri corsi di laurea e/o da altri Atenei dovranno presentarsi ad un colloquio di ammissione che mira a verificare, dal punto di vista amministrativo, il possesso dei requisiti curricolari di accesso. In tale occasione la Commissione si riserva di prendere in esame eventuali richieste di convalida di crediti aggiuntivi, fino a un massimo di 36, certificati dai candidati stessi.

The undergraduate course in History and the postgraduate course in Historical Studies have an old tradition of international exchange that started at the beginning of the Erasmus Programme, which is now called Erasmus Plus.
The annual exchange opportunities are available to both students and professors. The University of Milan has Erasmus exchange agreements with universities in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Turkey and Cyprus.
All students currently enrolled at either the undergraduate History course or the postgraduate M.A. course in Historical Studies can study abroad at a partner university for 6 or 9 months. Students who are attending a Ph.D. course can also study abroad at some of the above destinations.
While abroad, a student can attend courses, take exams and do research work, which then will be given an amount of credits depending on the study contents and on the duration of the exchange.
The study programme, which is called Learning Agreement, is agreed upon before leaving, depending on the courses, exams and activities that the student wants to focus on, according to his study plan. The student will then be able to get the credits needed to complete his study plan thanks to those professors who carefully compare the course contents of the University of Milan to those of partner universities. It is possible to focus on history, but also to get some credits in departments different from humanities.
The Department has a permanent international representative. Every year a meeting is organised for those students who are leaving, so as to give them specific information about destinations and contacts.
The Department of History has international agreements for research and teaching development with other universities, for instance the Lomonosov University of Moscow. In this case, it is possible to plan specific study plans with the person in charge. The study will then be recognised according to the above criteria.
Furthermore, the Department of History is included in the Erasmus Plus-Placement Programme, which enables students who graduated within 12 months to access an exchange programme. Information about selection processes and international partners (archives, libraries, editors, cultural institutes) are available on the Department of History website. This programme enables students to access training experiences in order to get professional knowledge.
