The course will offer our PhD students some theoretical and methodological training on translation activity, taking into account their previous knowledge in the field and their different linguistic skills, and trying to focus, as far as possible, on notions and tools that can be used with any pair of languages. The planned lectures will therefore fall within the following guidelines:
1) a theoretical line, aiming to illustrate some of the most relevant translation theories that emerged in particular during the twentieth century;
2) a methodological line, aiming to comment on some of the basic tools that are indispensable nowadays for the work of every translator (linguistic analysis of texts, lexicographic tools, translation memories and automatic translators, collaborative translations, etc.);
3) a historical-cultural line, aiming, finally, to illustrate the role that specific ideological and cultural choices (religious, philosophical, political) have historically played, and still play today, in translation activity and, consequently, the impact that translations have had and continue to have on the linguistic, literary and cultural system of the receiving community.
