Learning objectives
Skin pathologies are numerous, very common and above all they are the clinical conditions most frequently observed in practice and with which the graduate is most often engaged. For these reasons their knowledge is essential for the acquisition of the One Day Competences of the Veterinary Physician required by EAEVE. Moreover, for this branch of veterinary knowledge there are also a European College (ECVD) and an American College (ACVD) that recognize skin diseases as a relevant specialist subject. This course focuses on the diagnostic pathological approach to the dermatologic patient in a variety of conditions. In addition, it is intended to provide the student with knowledge and skills related to common internist situations related to cutaneous diseases of varying pathogenesis in small animals. A systematic, case-based, problem-oriented approach (POA) will be used to achieve this goal.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
The course aims to provide the student with basic knowledge and skills necessary for the correct pathological diagnostic approach from the macroscopic to the microscopic and, in selected cases, the internal pathway of the dermatological patient The student must know the main laboratory techniques used in dermatopathology as part of an integrated diagnostic process that starts from the macroscopic to the microscopic findings. The student must also know the most frequent cutaneous pathologies of dogs and cats and their association with possible internal medicine pictures.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
The student must know how to perform diagnostic pathological investigations knowing the methods of sampling of appropriate material to be submitted to the diagnostic laboratory. The student must also know how to interpret the results of the diagnostics and, when applicable, know the internal medicine correlates to the corresponding skin diseases.
Autonomy of Judgment
Independently, the student must know how to correctly search for and subsequently use information obtained from scientific databases and recent texts on dermatopathology and internal medicine.
Communication skills
The student must be able to adequately communicate to the study group and to the faculty the contents of scientific papers related to topics developed during the course of study.
Ability to Learn
The student must demonstrate an adequate method of study and learning aimed at the practical application of the notions learned during the course in order to act appropriately when faced with a problem of skin pathology.

Prerequisites for admission
The preliminary knowledge for adequately address the course are those of pathology of the third year.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a practical test for each of the modules of the course.
Evaluation criteria:
As regards the evaluation, the following elements of judgment are adopted:
· 28-30 points: excellent and in-depth knowledge of the topics. Clarity of presentation and perfect use of the terminology of the subject. Excellent order and synthesis.
The highest grade is awarded with honors when the overall result is well beyond the level expected by a student at the corresponding level of study.
· 25-27 points: good knowledge of the topics. Clarity of presentation and correct use of the terminology of the subject. Good order and synthesis.
· 22-24 points: superficial knowledge of the topics. Partial clarity and sometimes imprecise use of the terminology of the subject. Acceptable order and summary.
· Rejected-21 points: the answer is severely lacking or missing entirely. Completely insufficient knowledge of the arguments. Disordered exposition, devoid of scientific logic and expressed with an incorrect terminology of the subject. Inadequate order and synthesis.
Clinical rotation
Course syllabus
In the document of the Day one competences "(DOCs), drawn up by the European Coordinating Committee on Veterinary Training, there is a list of knowledge and skills that the new graduate must possess. The electronic logbook lists the practical skills that the student must acquire to satisfy what is reported in the DOCs document. The hospital rotation is aimed at making the student acquire the skills and competences shown in the electronic logbook which from time to time it will be appropriate to apply on patients and case studies assigned.
Teaching methods
Practical work on referred for visit and hospitalized patients and on biological material provided for diagnostic purposes at the Teaching Veterinary Hospital. The work will be carried out by the students individually or in groups under the direct guidance of the teachers. All students will carry out activities in the Companion Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital, in the Ruminant and Swine Clinic, in Equine Clinic and in the facilities of the diagnostic services.
Teaching Resources
No specific reference material is foreseen. In relation to the activities carried out from time to time, students may be asked to research and discuss scientific literature on specific cases observed.
Cytological examination of skin diseases
Course syllabus
Description and interpretation of cytological samples of various origins (especially inflammatory and neoplastic) under the microscope.
Teaching methods
The teaching is exclusively dedicated to the evaluation of cytological samples of various origins and pathological nature under the microscope.
Teaching Resources
The study material is provided by the teacher from time to time based on the pathologies that are evaluated, diagnosed and discussed.
Diagnostic in internal medicine associated with dermatological clinical cases
Course syllabus
The program follows both cases of spontaneous pathology in which there are skin pathology conditions associated with pathologies of internal interest, as well as exemplary cases prepared by the teacher.
Teaching methods
Teaching takes place both directly in the clinic on the patient and on clinical cases prepared ad hoc by the teacher
Teaching Resources
The study material is provided by the teacher from time to time based on the pathologies that are evaluated, diagnosed and discussed.
Pathology of non-neoplastic skin lesions: approach to the histopathological "pattern analysis"
Course syllabus
The program provides for the evaluation under the microscope of dermatopathological conditions of a non-neoplastic nature.
Teaching methods
The teaching method is linked to the evaluation of microscopic histological samples, both directly and through the study of ad hoc cases produced by the teacher, of pictures associated with dermatopathological conditions of various kinds, especially non-neoplastic.
Teaching Resources
The study material is provided by the teacher from time to time based on the pathologies that are evaluated, diagnosed and discussed.
Pathology of skin tumors
Course syllabus
The program includes practical operations of trimming the histological samples of skin neoplasms, as well as their evaluation under the microscope
Teaching methods
The teaching is practical both in relation to the management of biopsy material from skin neoplasms, and in relation to the histopathological diagnosis of these conditions.
Teaching Resources
The reference material is provided by the teacher according to the neoplastic pathology investigated in the lesson.
