Internship requirements and enrolment

Pursuant to article 102 of Law Decree no. 18 of 17 March 2020, in accordance with conversion law no. 27 of 24 April 2020, the license to practice as Medical Practitioner may obtained as follows:

  • Qualifying degree: if the Medicine degree includes the qualification earned through an internship in the medical, surgical, or general medicine area, graduates qualify to practice as Medical Practitioners.
  • Post-graduate qualification: if the Medicine degree does not include the qualification earned through an internship in the medical, surgical, or general medicine area, graduates will qualify to practice as Medical Practitioners after successfully completing their internship.

Postgraduate internship

Graduates may choose their internship tutors through the University "tutors choice" application. The application is usually open to eligible candidates 30 days prior to the internship start date.

The internship quarters are generally as follows (unless otherwise provided by the Ministry): January-February-March, April-May-June, July-August-September, October-November-December (Regulations approved by the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Medicine on March 11, 2020).

Due to the current health emergency, the internship in general medicine will take place remotely.

Due to the restrictions on access to hospital wards, candidates will be notified of the procedures for internal medicine and surgery tutor assignment by the Student Office. Tutors are assigned based on graduation date, to allow graduates to qualify to practice as Medical Practitioners soon after graduation, subject to the current emergency situation.

For the purposes of qualification, graduates are required to make the following payments through Online Services - Payments, tuition fees, exemptions - Payment Services - Contribution for office services:

  • € 49.58 - State tax for qualification;
  • € 200.00 - University fee for qualification.

Only graduates from Università degli studi di Milano are allowed to apply for the internships

Undergraduate internship

Students enrolled in the 6th year (on and off-track): tutor choice

Students enrolled in the 6th year (on and off track) of the degree programmes in Medicine of the University of Milan, who have passed the fundamental exams for the first four years, may choose their internship tutors through our "choice of tutors" application. The application is usually open to eligible candidates 30 days prior to the internship start date.

The internship quarters are generally as follows: January-February-March, April-May-June, July-August-September, October-November-December (Regulations approved by the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Medicine on March 11, 2020).

Due to the current health emergency, the internship in general medicine will take place remotely.

Due to the restrictions on access to hospital wards, candidates will be notified of the procedures for internal medicine and surgery tutor assignment by the Student Office.

In this emergency phase, tutors are assigned based on the undergraduate academic career, so as to prioritize graduates’ qualification in order of graduation session.

For the purposes of qualification, graduates are required to make the following payments through Online Services - Payments, tuition fees, exemptions - Payment Services - Contribution for office services:

  • € 49.58 - State tax for qualification;
  • € 200.00 - University fee for qualification.

Students enrolled in the 5th year: tutor choice

Due to the national health emergency and attendant restrictions on access to hospital wards, internships for students enrolled in the 5th year are currently suspended.
