Open data
The University of Milan follows open data principles to promote transparency, participation and innovation in science, in accordance with Italy's Three-Year Plan for IT in Public Administration and the EU's Open Science policy. In 2023, the University embarked on its journey towards the implementation of open data by formalising its adherence to the "General criteria for open data" of the Lombardy Region. This step allowed the University to start contributing to the regional website dedicated to the publication of reusable data.
The datasets published by the University of Milan are also available on the data portals of:
- the Lombardy Region: dati.lombardia.it
- the Italian government: dati.gov.it
- the European Union: data.europa.eu.
"Open data" is any information collected, produced or updated by public administrations and made available to anybody free of charge. Non-confidential data owned by public administrations can be made available in an open and standardised format, under a licence that allows for reuse.
- Better transparency: data is made available in an open format, facilitating citizens' participation and control over public spending.
- Support to innovation: citizens and enterprises are provided with valuable data for developing applications and services, which is essential to build more sustainable and reliable AI systems.
- Improved efficiency: open data reduces costs and time needed to retrieve information, which leads to more efficient administrative management.
- Facilitation of social control: citizens are able to check how public funds are spent, and to monitor the activities implemented by institutions.
