Learning objectives
The course will focus the principles of animal nutrition, including digestive physiology and metabolism of companion and farm animals; nutrient properties and requirement for enhancing health and different aspects of animal production and performance; principles of feed evaluation and ration formulation will also be given.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:the student must demonstrate knowledge of the nutritional characteristics and safety of the feedstuffs used in animal diets as well as the nutritional needs of the animals in the different physiological and production phases. Promote animal health through the adoption of suitable diets. Evaluate the condition of the body, the well-being and the state of nutrition of the animals in order to advise the client or the breeder the best food solution. Consider the costs of feed in particular with regard to the production aspect
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student must demonstrate that he is able to apply the knowledge acquired through the formulation of rations both for animals from income in the different production phases, and for pets in the different physiological phases.Autonomy o judgment: The student must be able to deal critically and proactively with the study of the subject, analyzing the material provided by the teacher and the recommended textsCommunication skills: During the frontal and practical lessons, the student must be able to present the acquired knowledge, using appropriate terminology, updated and in harmony with the other disciplines.

Lesson period
First semester
During the emergency teaching phase, lectures will also take place on Microsoft Teams in synchronous mode at established times and will be recorded and available on the platform itself in asynchronous mode.
The course will alternate different teaching techniques: lectures, exercises (feed formulation, data base consultation) and seminars. Lessons may also include pre-recorded materials. Educational outings will be replaced by remote seminars.
The program will remain unchanged, however the content of the individual lectures could be modified according to the teaching methods described above. Reference materials are unchanged. The teaching material will be uploaded to Ariel. The methods for verifying learning and the assessment criteria will not be subject to changes, it being understood that the exam will take place in person in writing or through the platforms made available by the University according to the directives in force at the time of the exam.
Prerequisites for admission
Passing the Zootechnics exam is mandatory preparatory. Knowledge of biochemistry and physiology are fundamental prerequisites
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam takes place in a single practical test and includes:
- Three open questions (1 for each module) to which the student will have to answer clearly and concisely.
- Thirty multiple choice questions (10 for each module, 5 possible answers) with the possibility of choosing one or two correct answers.
- Two practical exercises that involve the development of a diet for pets and farm animals.
